Over the past year, the staff and school community have spent time breaking apart the traditions of the Mercy sisters and establishing our school Charism. Last year, our school focused on the Mercy Value of Love. It is important our staff and students know of and about our school story so we can understand the importance of our Mercy Values.
This year, our focus is on the Mercy Value of Community. During his life, Jesus was not only a member of a community but also a leader within the community. He generously shared his life wih his community, showing them love and concern for all. There are many stories in the Gospels that tell of Jesus with his people.
Our school is named after St Jospeph. St Joseph was a man who understood the value of community. He is the patron saint of families. A family is one type of community. Families are contribute, value and connect with others to form one larger community.
Sisters of Mercy became involved with our school in 1879. The Sisters of Mercy demonstrate what community means by creating a welcoming, open and respectful environment for all people no matter who they were or where they had come from.
This week, our Year 1 and Year 6 students came together for the buddy groups and create renewed connections and community. Together, they participated in Christian Meditation and an art activity that celebrates their connection.
On Wednesday, 10th Feburary at 9am, we will come together to welcome and celebrate the beginning of our new school year with the Beginning of Year Mass. We will also recognise the leadership of our Year 6 students.
Due to Covid regulations, only our Year 6 students are able to invite guests. Our Mass will be live streamed; https://sjnwtsv.catholic.edu.au/news-events/live-streaming
Hope you are able to join us online.
Hope all have a wonderful week,
Trina

Parent Information Evening - Tuesday 9th February
5:45pm Principal's address and introduction to teaching staff
6:00pm - 6:25pm Session 1 in your child's classroom.
6:30pm - 6:55pm Session 2 in your child's classroom (Repeat of session 1)
Our Parent Information Evening is being held next Tuesday 9th February. This is a great opportunity to meet your child's teacher/other families and be informed of curriculum matters, school events and other important information.
Detailed discussions regarding your child are best made via an appointment with your child's teacher as Tuesday evening is a summary for all families.
How do I get my child to tell me about his/her day?
"Good", "Ok", typical responses I am sure you hear each day when you ask your child about his/her day.
Try these questions to encourage your child to provide more information. They certainly started a conversation when I asked Joey's kids and teachers. See the snippets in brackets.
1. What made you smile today? (Elizabeth, Immie Year 4 - Seeing my friends, telling jokes and....)
2. Did anyone do anything silly to make you laugh? (Mr Meekin - someone pranked my cup of tea with sugar to watch my face curl because....)
3. What was the most popular game at lunchtime? (Elliot Prep - Playing on the monkey bars and then....)
4. If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be? (Mrs Neilson - More hours in my day to get....)
Have a great week.

Welcome to our library to both past and new parents. As Teacher Librarian in your school I’m here to foster your child’s reading journey. My aim is to connect your children to books and reading for pleasure as a life long journey. Part of my program is to encourage your child to borrow and read regularly.
Below is your child’s designated borrowing day. Please ensure they have a library bag.
Library lovers Day
On Feb 14th is Library lovers Day. We will celebrate it on Feb 12th. The library is always open on a Friday before school but……..
For this special day I invite you, to pop in before school and join in our loving books activities or just simply come in, relax and read with your child. The theme is make a date with your library so lock it in.
Junior Librarians
Every year children in Years 4-6 have the opportunity to apply for the position of Junior librarian. I feel very honoured that I have had so many students applying for this position. As there is such a big support I have divided them into 2 groups. Some students will work in semester 1 and the others will work in semester 2. Some students in year 6 have been asked to assist with training our large numbers of year 4s and will work for the whole year. Well done to all those students who had successful applications.
A note will come home shortly with students. They are now our library ambassadors which will see them providing lunch time activities and promoting reading. They are asked to continue their reading so they can recommend books to their friends.
Here are some of the junior librarians from Year 5 and Year 6

Library email
Once a month you will receive an email to see what books your child has out. If they have books out this is good news. The email subject is automatic with a title that says current and overdue books. Do not panic as children are allowed to have books for two weeks if they need.
Book Club
Once a term children will have the opportunity to buy books for their home library. This can be done online or you can use pocket money and pay with cash. The first time you order books online you will have to set up your child’s details. A brochure will be sent out with more information.
Author Visit
During the year, we endeavor to invite an author to our school to talk to children about the craft of writing and publishing books. Children get to talk to the authors and ask questions during the workshops. This is an exciting event for students as they meet a famous author.
Book Week
In term 3 the school hold a literature festival. Children dress up as their favourite book character and participate in lots of fun activities.
Library Levy
Thanks to all parents who have contributed to this levy in the past. These funds keep our library well stocked with the latest books to entice your children into reading. Children are welcome to request books, which, if suitable, will be purchased for our library.
Before school
Children and parents can pop in before school every Friday to read or borrow.
Has your child had their serve of reading aloud today?
Happy Reading
