Dear Parents and Carers,
What a great week we have had at St Joseph’s.
Tuesday saw our Putney Swimming Team compete at the A Schools Swimming Carnival where they were narrowly defeated by Cathedral. Despite this, our team still managed to bring home the A School Average Trophy and the Runners Up Trophy. A huge thank you to Mr Meekin for coordinating our team and all of the staff who assisted with training in the lead up to the carnival.
All of our classes have finalised their assessment and our teachers have been busy finishing off report cards. Reports will be available on Friday 4th December at 12pm via the Compass Portal. Please ensure that you have been able to access Compass before this time. If you need any help with this, please do not hesitate to see the ladies in the Office.
If your child isn’t returning to St Joseph’s in 2021 (other than our Year 6 students), could you please let the Office know as soon as possible. This will assist us in our planning for next year. Just a reminder that the 2020 school year finishes on Friday 4th December at 12pm.
There has been an increasing number of students arriving at school very early. Please remember that there is no supervision of students until 8am. If you need to drop your child/ren off early please contact OHSC to arrange before school care. This is a matter of safety for our students. Thank you for your cooperation regarding this.
Have a wonderful week
Take care
Amanda
Christmas Appeal
As the school year draws to a close, we are all starting to think of Christmas. Sadly, for some, it is not the joyful celebration that we have come to know. This year, we are once again inviting our school community to help us live our faith in action as we support the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal by donating goods to those who may otherwise go without and help us give the best present ever to those in need. We will be presenting our hampers to SVDP at our Christmas/Giving Mass on Wednesday 2nd December.
When donating please consider "what would my family want on Christmas?"
Sacramental Program
Our parish has advertised the dates for the Sacramental Program for 2021. Students from Year 3 (8 years) and above are invited to participate. Year 3 and 4 families will be emailed an invitation and as the program for 2021 begins early, it would be appreciated if you could email the parish office for an enrolment form before the end of the year.
SACRAMENTAL JOURNEY 2021
Dates now Available
Enquiries and Enroments are now open regarding the Sacramental Journey for 2021. The Sacramental Journey 2021 will commence with the enrolment evening meeting, Monday 8 FEBRUARY 2021.
To obtain your Information Booklet and Enrolment Form please email St Joseph's Parish Office, stjoeys@tsv.catholic.org.au
NAIDOC Week
This week, every student in our school decorated a hand as part of an art installation to celebrate NAIDOC week. Some of our Indigenous students, Keeley, Thomas, Emily and Silvie visited each class with a powerpoint presentation highlighting this year's theme, "Always Was, Always Will Be". They also taught our classes the Indigenous ‘Our Father’.
Thank you to our NAIDOC committee Tracey McConnachie, Donna Bloxsom and Belinda Walker for leading these students.
Year 6 Religion
In class, Year 6 students have been learning about the titles and images of Jesus and his relationship with God the Father and with humanity. They have summarised their understanding of theJesus as Messiah in these images. Here is some of their wonderful work!
Rite of Passage
Next Tuesday night, our Year 6 students will gather for this special liturgy and celebration of their years at St Joseph’s. Rite of Passage is usually held in St Joseph’s Church but this year will be held in the hall to allow each student to invite three guests. We look forward to this evening where we farewell our Year 6 class as they move on to secondary school.
Please find here the link for the livestream of our Rite of Passage.
Christmas/Giving Mass
On Wednesday 2nd December at 9am, we will celebrate the end of the school year with our Giving and Christmas Mass. This Mass will be held in the Hall at 9am. This year, due to Covid space restrictions, only the parents of Year 6 students and 2021 School Captain parents are invited to attend. We look forward to the return to normal conditions when all our families can join us but our Mass will be live streamed for those unable to attend.
With so much on for families with both school and extra-curricular activities, here is a lovely prayer to help us through the final weeks of our school term!
Lord,
In quiet times, we see your face and we feel your holy presence
In busy and hectic times, we tend to run aimlessly away from your help.
In our most fatigued and stressful times, we need you most.
Send us your calming Spirit. Lighten our hearts, Lord.
Help us to work in a Spirit of wisdom, overcoming the stress that can slow us down Lord. Jesus, may your life always stand before us.
You call us to a ministry that is sometimes overwhelming.
Slow us down to see your face and to feel your hand upon our shoulder. Amen
Grace and blessings for the week ahead, Jan

Pre-loved Book Fair
Every two years I like to hold a pre-loved book fair in our library to raise funds for resources. Please bring in any suitable, clean books for children and drop them off at the library. Thank you for the books that you have brought in so far. Share the joy of reading with another family by donating some books.
We will hold our book fair on Nov 24th and Nov 25th. The children always enjoy shopping. All books are priced at $1.00 or $2.00.
Litpro Achievers
Our Year 5 students have been reading lots to achieve their reading goals. Congratulations to Caitlin and Harper for achieving Gold and congratulations Phoebe for achieving silver.
Borrowing
This is our last week of borrowing. All books must be returned next week. I will send out an email with your child’s current loans. I encourage you to use the public libraries over the holidays. It is a free service and there is so much to choose from. I totally recommend spending a couple hours there each week with your family as it is so relaxing.
Top Borrower Winners
Each year I like to reward the children in Years 2-5 for their regular use of the library. Readers become leaders!
Congratulations to the following students whom have been invited to our end of year Mad Hatter’s Reading party this Friday afternoon.
Year 2 - Charlie Joyce and Arabella S Robinson
Year 3 - McKenzie Henderson and Tristan Wiltshire
Year 4 - Georgia Myles and Indiana Layla
Year 5 - Lynette Njau and Phoebe Morris
Year 6 - Quinn Pascoe and Bridgette Boyle
Journals
In year 2 each student receives a journal and uses it to reflect on different books and activities happening in our school. In year 5 they get to take it home and can continue journaling their lives. I remind them that there are children’s diaries which have been published such as Anne Frank’s diary and Yoko’s Diary.
Happy Reading
Belinda Walker (Teacher Librarian)
Interschool Swimming Carnival 2020
Congratulations on another outstanding performance by our St Joseph’s Putney Interschool Swimming Team who competed in the A Schools Carnival at Long Tan Pool on Tuesday. We managed to continue our outstanding run from last year, winning the A School Average Trophy (based on student numbers) and Runner Up Trophy. The Cathedral School were narrow winners by 10 points overall. Our staff representatives Mrs. Wescott, Mr Meekin and Mrs. Wheeler were delighted with the team spirit and behaviour of our squad. A sincere thanks to parents who managed to get their children to the pool for the early starts and our dedicated staff for their support. In particular, special thanks to Miss Michelle, Ms. Higgins, Miss Lisa and Mrs. Westcott who assisted with training. Children who placed in division 1 events will receive their Townsville Primary School certificates next week. Bring on 2020!
