Our Story
This week our classes begin their focus on our Mercy Value of Community. When exploring our values it is important that we look at each value through the lens of the Gospels, St Joseph our Patron Saint and Catherine McAuley founder of the Mercy Sisters so that we can fully understand how the value applies to us here at St Joseph’s. Today we will examine the value of Community through each of these lenses.
During his life, Jesus was not only part of a community but he was also a leader in the community. He generously shared his life with his community, showing them his love and concern for all members. There are many stories in the Gospels of Jesus with his people. When we think about the value of community we consider:
- Respect for all (treat others with respect and regard, respect other person’s point of view)
- “No man is an island”. We develop only in relationships with other people.
- We are God’s pilgrim people, not just a collection of individuals.
- Understanding, welcoming and inclusion (be open to the diversity of God’s creation)
- Acting with integrity to bring about reconciliation
(taken from TCEO Gospel Values document)
Our school is named after St Joseph. St Joseph was a man who understood the value of community. He is the patron saint of families and workers. Both being a special type of community. St Joseph stood up for what is right.
Catherine McAuley demonstrated what community meant by creating a welcoming, open and respectful environment for all people no matter who they were or where they had come from. She taught us how to make a positive difference in the lives of others through her words and actions.
Prayer
Almighty God, you have created all people and all of creation. We give you thanks for this gift. Open our hearts and our eyes to see our communities as you would have us to see them. Help us to love our neighbours more deeply so that we can create peaceful and just communities. Inspire us to face differences and to stand up for what is right. Help us to find the courage to sit and hear others when so often we want to be heard first. Help us to remember that we are stronger when we work together. Let us see all people as children of God. We make this prayer to you in Jesus’ name. Amen

To Live Life to the Full: Mental health in Australia today
The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting the mental health of many members of our parishes, schools and communities. In fact, most of us will experience a mental health problem at some point over the course of our lives. Understanding mental health will help us to be aware of those who need our support. Our parishes, organisations and communities can be places of acceptance care and healing, not places of rejection, judgment or stigma. Please click on the link above to read the full statement.
Feast Day Saint Mary MacKillop - 8th August
We celebrate the feast of St Mary of the Cross this week. Mary was a person who showed complete trust and faith in God. She didn’t worry about what she had because she wanted to focus on the things that really mattered. She loved the poor deeply and believed God would provide. Even when times were very tough, Mary trusted in God. Mary of the Cross is Australia’s first saint. Mary devoted her life to helping others and trusted that God would provide all that she would need to do that. Mary was a person who focused on the things that really mattered. She had great faith in the providence of God.
Have a great week!
Take care and God Bless
Amanda

Changed Book Week Format: Only 2 weeks to go. Have you sorted out what book character you are coming as? This year we'll have a different Book Week format to stay in line with Covid Restrictions. This means it will not be a whole school gathering and parents can not attend.
Children will come to school dressed in their costumes and they are welcome to wear them for the day. Please ensure they have safe footwear. Children will come down with their buddy classes in this order to show off their book characters starting at 8.45am:
- Yr2 & 4

- Prep & 5
- Yr3 & Kindy
Book Week Theme - Curious Creatures, Wild Minds.
Children are free to come as any book character that matches the theme. Attached is the character competition. Prizes will go to students who choose a character that represents the theme.
Costume Tips –
- Make a costume rather than buy one.
- Involve your child with altering something you have at home.
- Using felt is a great material to cut out some necessary shapes such as ears, bowties or crowns to add to the costume.
- Op shops have cheap Nic Nacs.
