June 5th, 12th & 19th - St Joey's Athletics Carnival @ School
June 23rd at 6:30pm in the Staffroom - P&F AGM followed by a general meeting
Dear Parents and Carers
As restrictions ease and we start to get back to normal we find ourselves once again resocializing in the workplace and public spaces. Having been isolated to some degree I found the attached article very interesting and helpful.
I am well aware, as are the people I work with and my family that I have my own particular quirks! No need to confirm them for me - I am aware. We all do, and so do our students/ children. While the article is directed to workplaces I think there is relevance in our day to day interactions as well. Tolerance and acceptance are part of who we are as a Catholic community, a part of what we teach students and something we want them to possess as well adjusted adults, and clearly, in recent weeks we have seen how a lack of it can lead us to some difficult places.
The one line that stood out for me in this article was the following, 'Remember that it is OK to be different, odd or eccentric. But it's not ok to be inconsiderate, disrespectful or offensive. Consideration, tolerance and flexibility need to work both ways.'
I hope you enjoy the article.
Have a great week.
Tim
On World Environment Day we pray for all human beings, that we will be filled with a spirit of concern for the future of our environment; bring an end to the exploitation of the earth’s scarce resources, and live as responsible stewards protecting and respecting this gift of creation God has placed in our hands.
World Environment Day is held every year on the 5th of June. It is an environmental awareness day run by the United Nations. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the environment and specific environmental issues. Wold Environment Day (WED) was established in 1972 but first held in 1974. 143 countries take part in World Environment Day, and the day focuses on environmental concerns ranging from pollution to global warming and sustainable food production to protection of wildlife.
Every year there is a new main focus for WED and each year a country or nation is selected to host the day. The theme for 2020 is "Celebrate Biodiversity", and will be hosted in Colombia in partnership with Germany. Colombia is one of the largest “Megadiverse” nations in the world to hold 10% of the planet’s biodiversity. Since it is part of the Amazon rainforest, Colombia ranks first in bird and orchid species diversity and second in plants, butterflies, freshwater fish, and amphibians.
On Friday our classes will be participating in a prayer celebration for World Environment Day. During the prayer, they will be asked to create a pledge about how they are going to help look after our earth. I encourage you to create a pledge with your family about how you can help protect the creation that God has entrusted to us. If your family does create a pledge we would love to see some photos of what you come up with. Please send them to ajones13@sjnwtsv.catholic.edu.au

Last Friday saw the first of our Athletics@Joeys events. Students in Years 3-6 participated in Shot Put on our oval. This field event was a great way to showcase skills learnt in PE classes and was an enjoyable experience for all concerned. This Friday, we venture to our hall for High Jump. We wish our competitors well. Students are asked to wear their PE/Sports uniform each Friday.

Year 5 Literacy Pro: It is wonderful to see the year 5 students reading a variety of chapter books to achieve their certificate levels. When they get up to silver and gold the prizes are awesome; free books and end of year library party. Ask your children about it. Remember if they are bored get them reading and doing their quizzes. Hopefully the incentives to read will get them motivated enough to actually discover the joy of reading.
A message from our Children’s Laureate Ursula Dubosarsky: “Read for your Life” is my Laureate motto. We don’t just want our children to learn to read, we want them to learn to love reading, and keep reading their whole life long. Reading is one of the greatest adventures the world has to offer, and that adventure starts with a book. One of the very best places to find as many books as you want – for free! - is the local library. And now the libraries are opening up again – hooray!
Junior Librarian Training: Today training involved selecting books for the library, Learning a little more about designing lunch time activities and we started planning for Book Week which is next term.
The Ickabog: What is this? JK Rowling is sharing her new story free on line.
https://www.theickabog.com/home/ Each week a new chapter will be released.
There is also a drawing competition attached to this new book. We will start reading it before school this Friday.
Every year there is a kid’s News writing competition. This year they want stories about how your child spent their 2 months in isolation. Check out the above blog for more information or go straight to this link- https://tinyurl.com/yd25tfww
