Attached this week is another great article about resilience and the skill of reframing situations. Sometimes this is not an easy skill but it is an important one to develop. I hope you enjoy the article.
Have a great week

Christmas Appeal
As the school year draws to a close, we are all starting to think of Christmas. Sadly, for some, it is not the joyful celebration that we have come to know. This year, we are once again inviting our school community to help us live our faith in action as we support the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal by donating goods to those who may otherwise go without and help us give the best present ever to those in need. Items can be brought into classrooms from Monday 18th November. We will be presenting our hampers to SVDP at our Christmas/Giving Mass on Wednesday 4th December.
When donating please consider "what would my family want on Christmas?"
From Monday 25th November until Friday 29th November, there will be a 'Guess the Number of Lollies in the Jar' competition. You can guess each morning from 8:00 until 8:30am. Each guess will cost 50c. There will also be a Christmas themed free dress day on Thursday 28th of November. Please bring a gold coin donation. Students need to wear sun-safe clothing and closed in shoes. All money raised will be donated to the St Joseph's Parish Church to help contribute towards repairing their roof.
Sunday’s Gospel
Luke 21:5-19 - Jesus predicts the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and warns his followers that persecution will come before the end time
Children, while innocently naïve about most world events, are also profoundly sensitive to the concerns felt by adults. We can help children interpret adult concerns by sharing information about current events in appropriate ways. We can also put these concerns in the light of God's kingdom and the assurance of God's care for us.
Discuss with your children one or more current events or a situation in your family which shows difficulties that may challenge our trust in a God who cares for us. Then read together the Gospel, Luke 21:5-19. Notice how Jesus said that even when his disciples are persecuted, God would be with them.
Together with your children, talk about ways in which God might bring good out of the difficult events you discussed. Talk together about some actions you might take as a family to make better the situations you discussed. Conclude by praying for the needs of the people involved in the events you named. In prayer, place each of these difficult situations into God's hands.
Have a great week
Take care and God Bless
Amanda

Sport@Joey’s 2019
Just when we thought that we couldn’t possibly repeat the feats of 2017/2018, our students have outperformed themselves again in 2019. The year got off to an incredible start with our A School Swimming Carnival. We managed to repeat our most outstanding result in A schools, winning the Overall Aggregate trophy and the Average Trophy (based on student numbers). Our enthusiastic and well trained team were victorious over St. Joseph’s Mundingburra (2nd), Holy Spirit (3rd) and Townsville Grammar (4th). These results were quite extraordinary given the size of our school.
Toby Kennedy was selected in the NQ Swimming team and participated in the Qld Championships in Brisbane.
We excelled at the Interschool Cross Country carnival, with each competitor giving it their all on the long Bicentennial Park Course. We had six top ten finishes from our strong Putney team: Charli Russell (2nd), Quinn Pascoe (4th), Sophie Hannay (5th), Milla Hannay (7th), Nicholas Barr (7th) and Estella Smith (8th). These students represented us at the NQ Trials, with Nicholas Barr progressing to represent NQ.
In Athletics, our team managed to collect all four trophies on offer, the Aggregate, Boys, Girls and Average Trophies. Joey’s held off The Cathedral School (2nd) and Wulguru State School (3rd). The President of the Townsville School Sport Committee gave a compliment to Joey’s when stating, “Congratulations to Joey's The Strand for their clean sweep of the shields. They were dominant on the track as well as in the field. Must be something in the sea air for them to do so well at both swimming and athletics!” A highlight of our 2019 athletic program was the announcement of Jy Gasa as the captain of the North Queensland Track & Field team.
Congratulations also to both St. Joey’s Rugby Union teams who participated in the annual TDRU Development Cup. Our mighty juniors were narrowly defeated in the final by Currajong State School (15-5). The seniors played a magnificent final, with St Clare’s proving to be worthy winners in a ‘nail-biting’ 10-5 victory.
All players in both teams deserve credit for the way they conducted themselves, showing great team spirit and sportsmanship. We enjoyed the hospitality of the Palm Island community at the Obe Geia Challenge. St Joey’s managed to win all of their pool games leading to a show-down with St. Clare's in the final. St. Clare's prevailed in a closely fought 12-4 win, however, the Joey's team were magnificent with their skill, spirit and most importantly, sportsmanship. The NQ Cowboys staff remarked on our outstanding sportsmanship.
Our netballers enjoyed the NQ Netball Cup, participating in the largest Townsville Primary Netball carnival ever held. The TCEO Festival of Sport event for Year 6 students was another huge success. Our students played Futsal, Netball and Oztag all day long against other schools in our diocese.
Again this year, we had Tennis Townsville join us for Tennis clinics for Years 3 and 4. This initiative was made possible by funding from the Federal Government Sporting Schools Grant program. Basketball Townsville joined us also in the highly popular Rookies Basketball program, held after school in Term 4. T20 Blast Cricket and Townsville Golf conducted clinics at Joey’s, offering a great variety of skills.
Joey’s proudly participated in the annual Challenge Games held at the ‘Red Track’. This carnival enables all children with a disability to have fun and participate in as many or as few events as they want. Organizers gave out over 12,000 ribbons this year and to see students with ribbons pinned all over themselves was a real buzz.
We welcomed NQ Cowboy and Joey’s dad Josh Maguire as our Adopt A School Cowboy in 2019. Josh has done a magnificent job in advocating the ‘Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well’ message. A highlight of the year was the reintroduction of the Walla Challenge. Students in Years 4-6 were assigned mixed teams and played a round robin event that culminated in the World Cup final. New Zealand triumphed over England in a tight final in front of the school. Our outside broadcast team had a podcast with a live stream of the game.
We had an unprecedented number of students represent NQ in various school sports.
