Dear Parents and Carers
It is nice to begin my newsletter piece with the great news that our Readers Cup team have taken out second place at the State titles in Brisbane. They were beaten by the narrowest of margins, a mere one and a half points. Congratulations to our team, Mrs Walker and Mrs Bloxom for what is an amazing achievement. Just one more wonderful result in what has been a remarkable year for our students!
We are only one week away from our second Joey's at Sunset event. A wonderful lineup of music and food is ready to go and I know many people have already indicated they are coming on the night. I think it will be a great way to draw Term 3 to a close.
In addition to Joey's at Sunset we have big sporting events culminating next week. On Monday we have the World Cup Walla Rugby Grand Final. I am sure many of you have heard of the Walla Challenge (essentially two handed touch football) that has been taking place at lunch times for many weeks. Mr Meekin has been our chief referee and has been out every lunch break officiating over games. The final is this Monday and a live stream and commentary will accompany the game. Looking forward to an exciting final. The second event is the Obie Geia Rugby League Carnival. Each year our selected team takes part in this wonderful day. I know our students are looking forward to competing and enjoying the day. We wish them all the very best.
Have a great week.

Mini Vinnies
On Friday 30th August some of the St Joseph’s Mini Vinnies kids participated in a homeless sleepout with other students from Marian School and St Joseph’s Mundingburra. The evening was designed as an educational experience where the students could learn more about the very challenging problem of homelessness in our society.
A huge thank you to Miss Dani for all the work that she does with our Mini Vinnies kids and for providing them with such a wonderful opportunity.
Sunday’s Gospel
Luke 14:1,7-14 - When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.
Parents and children often enter into “negotiations” over how much allowance is to be earned at certain ages. Typically, when a child seeks an increase in allowance, parents will attach an increase in chores and responsibilities for them to better earn the increase. Talk about what kind of allowance you received as a child and what kind of responsibilities your parents expected of you to earn your allowance.
Explain that in Sunday's Gospel, Jesus talks about doing good deeds for others and expecting nothing in return. Read aloud Luke 14:1,7-14. Ask your children how they would feel if you told them to take on more chores without ever expecting another raise in allowance. Emphasise that Jesus teaches us that it is our duty as his followers to take care of the needs of others and to do so without expecting repayment. Discuss what other types of rewards we can find when doing good things for others.
Point out that we sometimes fall into the trap of wanting too many things and that, in the Our Father, we pray for “our daily bread,” meaning that we pray for only that which we really need in life. Conclude this time together by praying aloud the Our Father.

Have a wonderful week
Take care and God Bless

NAPLAN Online
In 2020, St Joseph’s will complete NAPLAN Online for the first time. In order to prepare for this transition, our students in Year 3 and Year 4 will be involved in a School Readiness Test next Tuesday. September 10th. This is intended to test the technical capability of our school to administer NAPLAN in an online environment next year. No results will be recorded for our classes involved.
NAPLAN 2019 - Individual reports for students in Year 3 and Year 5 will be posted to families this week and should arrive early next week. It is important that these reports are kept for future use as secondary schools often request a copy as part of their enrolment process.

Book Week Wrap up: Just fabulous. We had guest appearances from Professor McGonnagall and Professor Snape which was a fitting start to our reading event. The event was filled with magic and wonder. We had prep wizards, the very friendly giant and many characters from Harry Potter to name a few. Thanks to Hunting House and Gracie Signs for setting the scene with their art work for the perfect photo shoot. More photos can be seen on Facebook up loaded earlier this week. Our tuckshop was very popular with the Wonka factory churning out some goodies.
Thanks to all the wonderful authors who inspire us with their ideas.
At lunch time the children had fun at our chalk festival inspired by Margaret Wild’s Story Chalk boy.
The children who do prefer the outdoors had an opportunity to connect to books when our prayer garden was turned into the Secret garden of Reading.
The Reading Games saw 2 teams Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw compete against each other with each grade participating in a literary game.
Author Visit: On Friday Year 2 met the author Aleesah Darlison who shared her wonderful knowledge and love of animals. Her series Unicorn Riders is very popular among her many titles.
Readers cup team: Meg Burbidge, Keira Wallace, Thomas Wilkinson and Gemma Morris have been working hard to memorise the 5 books for the Reader’s Cup finals. In fact, they decided to dress up as the characters from Quark’s Academy which is one of the books they must read for Book Week. They head to the state championships today so please stay tuned to facebook to see how they go. They are very hard workers and extremely motivated to win this competition. We wish them Good luck.
Happy Reading

Brisbane International Townsville Red Ball Challenge
As a follow up to the Hot Shot Tennis program, our Year 4 students have been invited to attend the Townsville Inaugural Red Ball Tennis Gala Day. The challenge is designed to encourage participation, providing a fun, social playing experience whilst offering students an opportunity to represent St. Joseph’s in a team environment. The event will be held in week 10, on Friday 20th September (last day of term 3). The tournament will be held at the Kalynda Chase Regional Tennis Centre, from 9.30am -2.00pm. Students will be transported both ways with Sunbus. We look forward to this wonderful opportunity.
Walla Challenge Update
Our Walla Challenge is coming to a thrilling conclusion. The event has been held in break times over a number of weeks for students in Year 4-6. Next Monday 9th September sees our World Cup final between England V New Zealand. Our closing ceremony commences at 10.00am with kick off at approx. 10.10am. The game will be broadcast and streamed live on our Joey's Facebook page. A huge congratulations to all teams on their effort, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the challenge.
