Dear Parents and Carers
What an amazing night it was at our Tech Expo last night. Apart from the vast array of technology on display, the most impressive aspect of the night was our student 'techsperts'. They were just incredible and left no doubt in anyone's mind that the work taking place in our classrooms is having a direct impact on their learning and skill development. They were informative, articulate, engaged and very excited to be able to lead the learning in their chosen field. Congratulations and thank you to the many students who lead our Expo last night. Thanks also to our dedicated staff who supported our students, not only last night but each and every day in our classrooms. I would also like to sincerely thank our ICT Integrator Jason Bennett. Jason's passion and dedication to this field is outstanding and our students certainly displayed the benefits of this work last night. Thanks also to the many families who attended. I hope that you enjoyed the evening and you learned a lot from our students. I am looking forward to seeing the video wrap up of the Expo.
Below are some pictures of the night.
A reminder that the next P&F meeting will take place next Wednesday the 28th at 6pm in the staffroom. All are welcome to attend.
Have a great week.
Tim
Sr Regina I'm sure many of you would be aware that Sr Regina has sadly passed away. St Joseph's was blessed to have had Sr Regina touch the lives of parents, students and staff. The Requiem Mass for Sr Regina will be held on Monday, 26 August at 10.30am at St Joseph's Church, Fryer Street. Bishop Tim will be presiding. Eternal rest grant unto Sr Regina O Lord. May perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

Introducing Fr Siby
On Monday Fr Siby visited most of our classes to introduce himself. There were a lot of questions from the kids for Fr Siby about where he came from and how long he has been a Priest for. We are looking forward to working with Fr Siby and can't wait for him to visit again.
Sunday's Gospel
Luke 12:49-53 - Jesus has come not only to bring peace but also division.
Families strive for unity and togetherness. Nobody enjoys occasions when divisions in family life become all too evident. Yet, in Sunday's Gospel, Jesus says that he has come to bring division and that members of households will be divided.
Talk as a family about the things that you do together to bring about family unity (togetherness), such as sharing meals, going to church together, celebrating special occasions, or sharing family traditions. Explain that all of these things are important and that Jesus wants families to show this kind of love for one another. Point out that Sunday's Gospel sounds as though Jesus is saying something very different. Tell your children to listen closely as you read aloud Luke 12:49-53.
Explain that sometimes as parents, you have to make decisions that are unpopular with your children. You don't do it to divide the family but because it is the right thing to do. In the short run, such decisions may “divide” children from their parents. In the long run, however, doing the right thing will bring about a deeper unity. Talk to your children about decisions that they have to make that might be unpopular with their friends and how these decisions may divide them from others. Encourage them to pray to the Holy Spirit for the gift of courage (fortitude) so that they may do the right thing even if unpopular.

Have a great week
God Bless
Amanda

Book Week: Aug 30th Friday morning at 8.40. The theme is : Reading is my secret power. Students are asked to find a book that has a character they can relate to. This character may have a secret power or talent. I encourage children to be creative and make their costumes from items they already have at home. Please do not feel you have to buy a costume. Check out this site for some ideas of characters and costumes
Book Week competitions: There are a variety of competitions for the children to participate in.
- Design a character for Years 1-6
- Write a story for years 3-6- The day I woke up with a secret power.
- Why is reading my secret power poster – Year 2 - 6
Prizes are displayed in the cabinet in the library. The competitions are available at the Library.
Author Visit: Each year for book week I invite an author to visit our school and talk to our students. For students it’s like meeting a rock star. The ripple effect is amazing as suddenly that author becomes instantly popular and reading seems to soar. This Friday Years 3-5 are meeting Sally Odgers and Next Friday Year 2 are meeting Aleesah Darlison.
Raising readers: Thank you to the parents who are able to be a reading parent. It is the work you do at home that makes your kids readers.
Happy Reading

TCEO Festival of Sport Day
Tomorrow, our Year 6 students will participate in a gala day of sports at the TCEO Festival of Sport Day. Catholic schools from our diocese gather together for this fun-filled event. We will be represented across three different sports; Futsal, Netball and Oztag. Students were able to choose their preferred sport. We wish our teams all the very best of luck and hope that they enjoy the day whilst upholding the tradition of outstanding Joey's sportsmanship.
Qld State Athletics Championships.
A huge congratulations to our remarkable athletes Charli Russell and Jy Gasa (Captain) on their success at last weeks Qld State Athletics Championships, held in Brisbane. Charli managed 6th place in the 10 Year Girls Long Jump event. Jy also came 6th in the final of the 12 Year Boys 200m event. When you consider the size of our state and the quality of junior Athletics in Queensland, their efforts are incredible. Importantly, they are wonderful ambassadors for their school and for North Queensland.
