Dear Parents and Carers
It is great to be back as we kick off the second half of our school year. I hope the school holidays were an enjoyable time for all our families. I was fortunate enough to travel overseas for work and then have two weeks of long service leave, the first time in a very long time. I am grateful for the time away but am looking forward to getting back into work. What an amazing start to the year we have had at St. Joseph's. Swimming and Athletics carnival wins, academic excellence through amazing results in Young Speech Makers, Quest for Knowledge and Readers Cup victories, and to complete the semester, confirmation of Bronwyn Reguson, our P&F President, receiving a Queensland Spirit of Catholic Education Award. It has been an exceptional result for our school community.
While I was away for Beachathon, I would like to take this chance to sincerely thank the Beachathon Committee and our incredibly generous sponsors. I would also thank our students for their amazing fundraising efforts. Over $36000 was raised for our Race for Space. That is an amazing result! The campaign ran incredibly well, and each year the committee is making changes to enhance this event. A great deal of work goes into making the event such a success and I am very grateful for the support our community gives this event. Again, my sincere thanks to all involved.
This term promises to be just as eventful with Mulkadee, Catholic Education and NAIDOC week, Eisteddfod and a host of other events, will see the term go quickly. Our Year 5's have been enjoying a wonderful time on camp (if a little bit chilly) at Gumburu. A great venue, awesome food and time with friends always adds up to a great time. A huge thank you to our teachers and teacher assistants for their commitment to our students and for continuing to provide camp opportunities.
Finally this week I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work of Amanda Jones and Jan Oram during my time on leave. At a busy time of year, they took on additional responsibilities and never missed a beat. I am very grateful for their professionalism and dedication to our school community. I am also grateful to our staff who supported Amanda and Jan during this time. Our school community (and me) is very fortunate to have such talented and dedicated leaders and staff. Thank you.
Have a great week
Tim
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope that you all had a restful holiday break. It has been wonderful to see all the smiling faces of the kids this week and I have enjoyed hearing all about their adventures during the school holidays. As I have wandered around the school this week and visited all the classrooms it has been fantastic to see how quickly everyone has settled back into routines and expectations of their classrooms. I hope that everyone has a wonderful Term 3!
Sunday’s Gospel
Luke 10:25-37 - The parable of the Good Samaritan
Families rely on selfless love. Parents show love for their children not just when it's convenient, but whenever their children's needs must be met. Imagine if the members of a family were concerned only with their own needs. How quickly things would fall apart!
In the story of the Good Samaritan, we learn about someone who went out of his way to care for the needs of another. He recognized the victim as his brother and accepted responsibility for him. As a family, talk about the responsibilities of each member of the family. Share how you, as parents, care for the needs of everyone in the family even when it's inconvenient. Ask your children to share times when they did chores and helped the family even when it was not convenient.
Read aloud Sunday's Gospel, Luke 10:25-37. Talk about how the Samaritan went out of his way to care for the needs of the victim. Make a commitment as a family to follow the example of the Good Samaritan. Explain that the more you learn to accept responsibility for each other's needs at home, the more you'll be able to accept responsibility for the needs of others in the world.

We hope everyone had a great break. We had lots of fun at vacation care doing many activities such as Coding with Drones, Brolga Rugby, Full Throttle Theater Show, Karaoke 80’s Theme and tasting some delicious Torres Strait cooking for NAIDOC celebration.
During the holidays we also said Goodbye to two of our OSHC Staff Dom who has moved on to teach at St Anthony’s and Miss Julia.
A few reminders if you pick up your child/ren from school or they are absent from school on days they are to attend After School Care could you please notify us as early as possible either by phone, text or email.
Students are arriving at After School Care without their school hats. If you would prefer to leave another hat in your child’s bag to use at After School care it would be much appreciated.

Library Elves: The library had a little make over on the holidays.
Come in and check out the bright changes in the junior fiction area. A big thanks to Greta and Joanne for your help.
Book Club- Flyers will go out this week for children to buy a couple of books for their home library. Books make great gifts for cousins and friends too. 20% of sales comes back to the library as free books. You can do an online order or hand in money and order forms to the office by July 29th.
Lunch time activities: Each term a new roster of activities goes up with an assortment of different activities for the children to participate in at lunch time. This term the junior librarians are keen to start a lego club.

Raising readers: What do you have on your bookshelf at home? Having a place for children to grab something to read is a valuable tool to foster a love of reading. Remember you are never too old for picture books.
Happy Reading
