Dear Parents and Carers,
On Sunday our Instrumental Music students wowed us with their musical abilities at our Semester 1 Instrumental Music Concert. A huge thank you to Miss Hansen for organising the concert and to our instrumental tutors Jenny Hall (Piano), Damien Hill (Guitar), Susan Grinsell (Vocal), Laurell Bourne (Woodwind), Kate Saunders (Recorder) and Miss Hansen (Choir).
Thank you for your continuing support of the upcoming Beachathon. We have received wonderful support over the last few weeks through donations and volunteers assisting with the lead up to the event. A huge thank you to the Beachathon committee who have been working tirelessly in the background to secure sponsorship, promote our sponsors, organise prizes, prepare for Assembly each week and make arrangements for Beachathon day. Thank you also to the parents who have been assisting with Beachathon counting each Tuesday morning, the many hands have made the task so much more manageable. Our school community is incredibly grateful for all that you have done.
Just a reminder that all parents who are volunteering in classrooms with activities such as reading groups, sight words, maths groups etc must have completed the mandated Parent Induction session. This session must be completed every year. If you haven’t yet completed this session we will be running two sessions in Week 2 of Term 3. These will be held on Tuesday 23rd July at 9am and Wednesday 24th July at 5:30pm. If you are wanting to help in your child's classroom and haven’t completed the Parent Induction session then it is essential that you come along to one of these two sessions.
Over the past couple of weeks, there has been some noticeable variations of our school uniform being worn by students. This has included jumpers, hats, shoes and hair ties. Included in the newsletter this week is the school uniform list. Please ensure that students have the correct uniform for each day. If for some reason your child is unable to wear the correct uniform on a given day, please contact their class teacher to inform them. If you need to purchase new items our entire uniform is available from School Locker at Domain. Students should be wearing their school uniform with pride and being dressed in the correct school uniform is part of our Joey’s 5Rs where we show pride in being a Joey’s kid! Thank you for your assistance in this area.
On Tuesday night our P&F held their AGM. Congratulations to the following people who were voted into the executive roles:
President - Bronwyn Reguson
Treasure - Richard Kennedy
Secretary - Karen Boucher
Diocesan Representative - Ondrea Stumer
We are calling for expressions of interest in the Vice President position for the P&F. If you are interested in the position or would even like to know more please contact the P&F via their email pandf@sjnwtsv.catholic.edu.au. The next P&F meeting will be taking place on Tuesday 30th July at 6pm in the Staff Room. We would love to see you there.
If your child walks, rides or scooters home could you please have a family discussion about road safety and the importance of heading straight home. We have had several reports of students not acting in a safe and responsible manner when travelling home. I thank you for your assistance in keeping our students safe.
Teachers have been preparing reports for the first semester over the past few weeks. These will be available via the Compass Portal on Friday 28th June. If you are unsure of how to log into Compass or are having issues with logging in, please contact our Office staff as soon as possible.
Have a great week.

Christian Meditation Week
This week is Christian Meditation at St Joey’s. A unique part of the prayer life in Catholic schools in the Townsville Diocese is the practice of Christian Meditation. Christian Meditation is a form of contemplative prayer that supports the faith development of students. Christian Meditation is often called the prayer of the heart. It is a time to allow God into our lives through stillness, silence and simplicity. Christian Meditation is practised regularly in classrooms from Prep to Year 6 and complements the Religious Education curriculum strand, Prayer and Spirituality.
This week students have been engaging with Christian Meditation with their buddy class, out in nature and tomorrow (Friday) morning we would like to invite all family and friends to join our classes for Christian Meditation at 8:40am.

World Refugee Day
Today Thursday 20th June is World Refugee Day. It provides us with a great impetus to begin or to continue raising our awareness of how different people’s experiences are around the world. Teaching kids about refugees build upon qualities like compassion, kindness and understanding. Three things we all know the world can do with a little more of!
Pray for RefugeesLord God, no one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care. In your kindness, watch over refugees and victims of war, those separated from their loved ones, young people who are lost, and those who have left home or who have run away from home. Bring them back safely to the place where they long to be and help us always to show your kindness to strangers and to all in need Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Sunday’s Gospel
John 16:12-15 - Whatever the Father has is mine. The Spirit of truth will guide us.
This week we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. This Sunday and next Sunday, however, are designated as solemnities, special days that call our attention to central mysteries of our faith. Today, on the first Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast invites us to consider what we believe about God, who has revealed himself to us in the Trinity—one God in three persons.
Think of the last time you witnessed an act of selfless love in your family. Parents and caregivers of all kinds are called upon to act selflessly every day. Family life calls us to share selfless love with one another.
God is the model for us of selfless love. There was no need for God to create our planet or the creatures that inhabit it; it was an act of selfless love. There was also no need for God to send his only Son to save us. That too was an act of selfless love.
As we draw closer to God and the mystery of the Trinity, we learn about God's love. God has lavished us with love in the persons of the Son and the Spirit, who in turn nurture in us the desire to do the same. When we open ourselves to be filled with an awareness of the divine life within us, we participate in the endless spiral of love that leads to eternal life. Whenever we share selfless love in the family, we are sharing in the life of the Trinity.

Borrowing over the holidays: We welcome borrowing over the holidays as it is a time to wind down and relax so why not do it with a few books.
If your child is in year 5 and participating in the litpro they can access the quizzes from home. Many of the books they have on their shelves especially scholastic book club ones will have an online quiz. Regular reading will improve your child’s future. Judith Locke wrote about the importance of a reading Ritual in the courier Mail June 8th 2019 Some of her points were as follows :
We know that reading has many benefits. People who read regularly tend to have better general knowledge and better empathy because they are immersed in different places and experiences via different points of view.
Children who are read to usually have a better vocabulary as they are exposed to more unfamiliar words which can be explained to them and used in context.
Reading also improves their concentration skills, as they have to ignore other sounds and competing activities to focus on the page.
More of the article can be seen in my blogpost above
Book Week- The theme for book week is captured well by a Bob Grahame, a wonderful author and illustrator.
Holidays is a good time to find a book with a character that your child loves. The older students can check out the mystery section for some great characters who have multiple secret talents and powers. We strongly advocate creating a costume rather than buying one which has been the standing tradition at our school.
Happy Reading
