Dear Parents and Carers
I hope all our mothers and mother figures had a lovely Mother's Day on Sunday. It was wonderful to see so many mums at our coffee and croissant morning on Friday. It has been another busy week for our students as they prepared for our athletics carnival today. As always we are incredibly grateful to Mr Meekin for his dedication in making these days so enjoyable and successful. I am sure today will be no different. Good luck to all our teams.
The last few weeks have been busy as we conduct interviews for Prep 2020. It has been wonderful to meet so many new families ready to begin their school journey at St. Joseph's The Strand. I always enjoy the opportunity to meet and talk with new and existing families about our school. One of the key points that is discussed is the need for open and honest communication between home and school. It is these important relationships that bind a school community together. There is a need for families and the school to work together to ensure that we can provide every opportunity possible for our students. Relationships are never perfect and take work. Questions need to be asked and answered. It is important to me to ensure that families understand that the school has an open door policy where parents and carers are encouraged to seek answers or assistance from the school when required.
As the saying goes, you don't know what you don't know, and this is true of schools as well. If there aren't opportunities for parents and carers to seek information or an open and honest relationship between home and school then this can be a hindrance to building community. Over the last few years, I feel the school, the P&F and Board have worked hard to promote both a welcoming and transparent culture, and encourage families to seek assistance or information directly. It is important to me that this culture is embedded in our community. In meetings with new and existing families, I encourage them to make contact with staff and myself should the need arise. I would reinforce this message with all our families. If you have a concern, question or need assistance of and from the school then please let us know.
Over the next 3 weeks, I will be attending a course for professional development. Amanda Jones and Jan Oram will be acting in my place while I am away. While I have some concerns regarding how many new 'therapy pets' may arrive at school in my absence, I have every confidence in Amanda and Jan. I will be checking emails periodically during this time but for any concerns or questions you may have, please contact Amanda.
Our Beachathon 2019 begins next week and I know there are some big plans for this year. I don't want to give anything away but know it will be another amazing event. I am looking forward to the launch next Wednesday at assembly.
Have a great week.

Whole School Christian Meditation
Next Friday 24th May we will be gathering as a whole school for Christian Meditation at 8:45am to celebrate the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians. This feast reminds us about Mary's guidance over us and especially as people of Australia, as she is the patron saint of Australia. We would like to extend this invitation to all parents to join us at 8:45am for this silent, still and simple form of prayer.
Bishop Tim
Next Thursday 23rd May Bishop Tim will be visiting St Joseph's. During his visit Bishop Tim will speak with our Sacramental Program students, visit our classrooms and have morning tea with the staff.

Sacramental Program
Just a reminder to all of our Sacramental Program families that our Confirmation Preparation session is on this Sunday the 19th May. The morning will start with Mass at 8:30am and then our session 9:45am - 12pm. Please ensure that your child has some morning tea after Mass. We will be holding our session in the Music room and parents can pick their children up from outside the Hall at 12pm. Please remember that Mass is a family event.
Our Confirmation celebration is on Tuesday 21st May at 7pm in the Church. Bishop Tim will preside over our Confirmation celebration.
Sunday's Gospel
John 10:27-30 - Jesus describes his care for his sheep.
The shepherds of Jesus’ time knew their sheep and their sheep knew them! A different person could go into the sheepfold and call a sheep by name but the sheep would not respond. It knew its master's voice. Shepherds used to call their sheep and immediately they would follow. They didn't have or need sheep dogs or young boys on motor bikes to round up the sheep. The sheep responded to the sound of its master's voice.
God knows us individually and intimately. We may or may not all look alike and there are billions of 'us', but God can sort us out, easily identifying who is who. We are not just one of the crowd. God knows us intimately. Think about what it means to call someone by name. It assumes a relationship. How would you describe your relationship with God? How do you recognise the voice of Jesus today? What 'disguise' does it take? What voices call to us today? Whose voice calls forth an immediate response in you?
Have a wonderful week
Take care and God Bless
Amanda

The Race For Space is on!
Beachathon 2019 launches on Wednesday 22 May at Assembly.
I wonder who our Beachathon mascots - “Rocket Girl” and “Man on the Moon” will be this year!?
THANK YOU to Marissa Candy and the Marketing Factory for designing our awesome Race For Space logo!
Our goal this year is to raise money to purchase additional Flexible Learning Furniture for our classrooms.
This furniture will create exciting learning spaces that are flexible, mobile, engaging and adjustable – allowing our classrooms to be adapted as our students and their learning needs grow and change.
Fundraising:
Students will receive a sponsorship form from their classroom teacher on Beachathon Launch Day.
Parents can help their children to seek sponsorship and collect money from family, friends, colleagues and/or neighbours.
Students bring their sponsorship form and money to school for counting every Tuesday – starting Tuesday 28 May.
Money will be counted by our CCL’s and parent volunteers at 8:30am every Tuesday 28 May until Beachathon Day.
If you would prefer to pay directly into an account using your credit card, there is an option to go to the link on your child’s form that will take you to our secure online platform.
If you sponsor online, please ensure you put the child’s name and class you are sponsoring in the comments box.
Each class will track their fundraising efforts and these will be on display outside the office in the breezeway.
Incentive prizes for students fundraising efforts:
- Individual fundraising
- For every $20 raised per week, the student’s name will enter the prize draw for that week. For example, $20 = I chance, $40 = 2 chances etc.
- There will be a prize box at each assembly and if the student’s name is drawn, the student will be allowed to pull out a prize from the ‘Rocket Ship’ in a lucky dip type scenario.
- Class fundraising
- The class with the highest fundraising each week will receive a Zooper Dooper on Friday afternoon.
- The class teacher will receive a coffee voucher.
- Once a class reaches $1,000, they will receive a ‘homework free’ week.
Every student who goes into the draw each week gets additional chances to win prizes on Beachathon Day.
Thanks to our sponsors within the school community, there are fantastic prizes for students to win!
Sponsorship proposals for families with businesses will be sent out later this week.
