Dear Parents and Carers
What an amazing week it has been with so many successful events in just 4 days. Firstly congratulations to our school cross country team who performed so well at the interschool cross country on Tuesday. A full list of achievements is in our sports news this week. Well done to all our competitors.
On Wednesday our school was visited by the Strategic Leadership Team from Townsville Catholic Education. The visit was the culmination of eighteen months of review and reflection on our school community and then looking forward to the coming five years. The four Directors and our Executive Director, Jacqui Francis had a very productive visit and were made to feel very welcome by our staff and students. Our school leaders oversaw a special assembly where the Executive Director presented our school with a certificate of renewal. Discussion with the Strategic Leadership team focussed on current and future developments within St. Joseph's. It was a pleasure to have the team visit and we are very grateful for their continued support and leadership.

Sunday's Gospel
Jesus appears to the disciples for a third time after his Resurrection and shares a meal with them.
Sunday’s Gospel described what we can easily imagine as a picnic on the beach. Just as Jesus' miracle at the wedding feast at Cana blesses the love between man and woman celebrated in the sacrament of marriage, Jesus' attentiveness to food and mealtimes raises the possibility that our meal gatherings can be sacred times. In families, the domestic church, our meals together are everyday opportunities to gather and recall Jesus' presence with us. As in the Eucharist, we bring the gifts that God has given us, which have been prepared especially for our Mass, and at our family meals we share gifts that God has given to us and that we have worked together to prepare. This includes the food on the table and also the people who gather around the table. We ask God to bless these gifts and to be present among us in all of our interactions.
Consider a recent family meal: What food was served? Where did the food come from? Who prepared the food? Who served the food? Was mealtime a happy time? Why or why not? Observe that Sunday's Gospel tells about a meal that Jesus shared with his disciples after his Resurrection. Read aloud the Gospel, John 21:1-19. Reflect on the Gospel reading using the questions above. Talk about ways in which this meal that Jesus shared with his disciples might remind us of the meal we share at the Eucharist. You might choose to plan a special meal together as a family, encouraging each person to participate in the meal preparation. Pray together that Jesus will make his loving presence known in your family life.

A Prayer for Mothers
Loving God, We thank you for the women in our lives who love us, nurture us and protect us from harm. Bless them with strength and courage as they go about their lives and keep them safe from all harm. May we always value, respect and appreciate them.
Amen
Have a wonderful week
Take care and God Bless

NAPLAN
In 2019, NAPLAN tests will be conducted from Tuesday 14 May to Thursday 16 May.
Schools must schedule the tests on the dates agreed to by NAPLAN authorities.
NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through
school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning
Progress.
At the classroom level, it is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress. Data from these tests is used by SJS to track student
performance and to identify students requiring support or extension.
Authorities provide parents with the opportunity to withdraw their sons and daughters from the NAPLAN tests. If you do not wish your child to participate or if they will be absent during these times, please contact class teachers.
For more information, please refer to the NAPLAN Parent Information attached to this
newsletter and if you have any questions or concerns, please feel most welcome to contact us here at SJS.

The Race For Space is on!
Beachathon 2019 launches on Wednesday 22 May at Assembly.
I wonder who our Beachathon mascots - “Rocket Girl” and “Man on the Moon” will be this year!?
THANK YOU to Marissa Candy and the Marketing Factory for designing our awesome Race For Space logo!
Our goal this year is to raise money to purchase additional Flexible Learning Furniture for our classrooms.
This furniture will create exciting learning spaces that are flexible, mobile, engaging and adjustable – allowing our classrooms to be adapted as our students and their learning needs grow and change.
Fundraising:
Students will receive a sponsorship form from their classroom teacher on Beachathon Launch Day.
Parents can help their children to seek sponsorship and collect money from family, friends, colleagues and/or neighbours.
Students bring their sponsorship form and money to school for counting every Tuesday – starting Tuesday 28 May.
Money will be counted by our CCL’s and parent volunteers at 8:30am every Tuesday 28 May until Beachathon Day.
If you would prefer to pay directly into an account using your credit card, there is an option to go to the link on your child’s form that will take you to our secure online platform.
If you sponsor online, please ensure you put the child’s name and class you are sponsoring in the comments box.
Each class will track their fundraising efforts and these will be on display outside the office in the breezeway.
Incentive prizes for students fundraising efforts:
- Individual fundraising
- For every $20 raised per week, the student’s name will enter the prize draw for that week. For example, $20 = I chance, $40 = 2 chances etc.
- There will be a prize box at each assembly and if the student’s name is drawn, the student will be allowed to pull out a prize from the ‘Rocket Ship’ in a lucky dip type scenario.
- Class fundraising
- The class with the highest fundraising each week will receive a Zooper Dooper on Friday afternoon.
- The class teacher will receive a coffee voucher.
- Once a class reaches $1,000, they will receive a ‘homework free’ week.
Every student who goes into the draw each week gets additional chances to win prizes on Beachathon Day.
Thanks to our sponsors within the school community, there are fantastic prizes for students to win!
Sponsorship proposals for families with businesses will be sent out later this week.

Interschool Cross Country Carnival 2019.
Congratulations to all of our brave competitors that represented our school on Tuesday at the Townsville Primary Schools Cross Country Carnival. This is the only carnival that all schools compete together at the same time at the one place. Our school excelled at this carnival, with each competitor giving it their all on the long Bicentennial Park Course in steamy conditions. We had six top ten finishes from our strong Putney team: Charli Russell (2nd), Quinn Pascoe (4th), Sophie Hannay (5th), Milla Hannay (7th), Nicholas Barr (7th) and Estella Smith (8th). These competitors now go through to the North Queensland Trials on 28th May. Our top 20 runners also include: Will Finucane, Jy Gasa, Thomas Wilkinson and Elise Piper-Green. Our whole Putney team deserve recognition for their outstanding achievements in representing St Joey’s. When you consider that all events had such a huge number of competitors (approx. 750 overall) we achieved a great team result. Well done to our team: Tarj Galletta, Will Finucane, Nicholas Wilkinson, Charli Russell, Estella Smith, Lua Jennings, Quinn Pascoe, Riley Flanders, Riley Hibble, Sophie Hannay, Milla Hannay, Erica Round, Nicholas Barr, Jy Gasa, Thomas Wilkinson, Elise Piper-Green, Scarlet Gallagher.
Townsville Representatives
Congratulations to our most recent Townsville Schools Sport representatives. Quinn Pascoe was selected in the Townsville Football (Soccer) team and Gwyneth Barton in the Townsville Softball team. Both students now progress to the North Queensland trials and we wish them all the very best of luck.
