Dear Parents and Carers
It seems strange to be saying welcome to Term 4 as I am not sure where the rest of the year went. It has been another busy start to the term and more than likely will only get busier.
Currently, we are finalising staff for the coming year. As always, as soon as this is completed it will be communicated to the wider school community. As you can imagine this can take some time to get right, so I ask for your patience while we complete this process. Once finalised, staff will begin working on class allocations for students. Classes will be announced at our step-up day in week 9.
This time of year can be hectic, and after such an enormous year for our school community celebrating our 150th Anniversary, I am sure everyone, including our students, is looking forward to the Christmas holidays. I would like to take this chance to ask you for your patience and assistance as our staff work to complete another highly successful year and begin preparations for a new one. Levels of patience and understanding can be strained as the end of the year draws closer. It is important that we work together to finish the year in the best way possible.
The end of the year can also mean families will be leaving our school community and new families looking to join. To this end, I would ask that if you are not returning to St Joseph's in 2024 you contact the school as soon as possible so that families on waiting lists can be notified of available places. Your assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.
In other exciting news, Townsville Catholic Education is delighted to announce the opening of our first Co-Educational Secondary College; Mary Help of Christians Catholic College. Located in Shaw, next to St Benedict's Catholic School, the new college will cater to the growing demand for Catholic secondary education in the region. In 2025, the new college will open its door to incoming Year 7 students.
World Teachers' Day
World Teachers' Day, Friday 27th October is your chance to celebrate and show appreciation for the teachers in your community. We at, St Joseph's are blessed with some of the best!
While gifts, morning tea and coffee will all form part of the celebrations, the most meaningful thanks may come in the form of handmade cards and words of gratitude from our students and their parents.
Students and families to send messages of appreciation to their teachers by:
God of Love, Thank you for every teacher who notices a child’s special gift. Thank you for teachers who are listeners and gentle guides. Thank you for teachers who expect much and love enough to demand more. Thank you for the special teacher each one of us remembers.
God of Mercy, Sustain teachers who give everything they have. Strengthen teachers who assume the blame for so many problems beyond their control. Help exhausted teachers rest.
God of Strength, Encourage teachers to care and inspire them to nourish. Motivate teachers to keep on learning for the fun of it and to make learning enjoyable for children.
We wonder at teachers who know how to quiet a class of five-year-olds or help year fours be empathetic. We admire teachers who enjoy the budding writers or teach physics or math or history. Bless the people who are expected to accomplish these miracles and who know how to comfort children when miracles don’t happen.
God of Justice, Help and support teachers in their special calling, wherever they teach and whatever obstacles they must face. We pray these things in the name of our great teacher, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
– Prayer from the National Catholic Education Association
Missions Month
October is Missions Month.
The World Mission Month of October is a time when we can teach our children to respect people from other cultures and reach out to those people, particularly children who live in poverty. It is an opportunity for reflection, prayer and support for the missionary efforts of individuals, communities and the whole Church. This year, students across Australia are encouraged to not only learn about Timor Leste and the work of the Church there but to do something extraordinary for Mission through fundraising, advocacy and prayers.
On Monday, our school will begin the week dedicated to Mission Week with in-class prayer celebration and end with a crazy sock day on Friday. Gold coin donation to wear crazy socks.
For more information, please visit Socktober
Thank you for support!
Over the past three weeks, Joey's students have raised over $600 with their fund raising efforts.
Our Year 6 Faith and Service group has poured over 1000 icy cups and are excited to see if they can reach 2000 before the year ends.
Day for Daniel
On Friday, 27th October students are encouraged to wear red to school to raise awareness for child safety.
On this day, parents and educators are encouraged to start conversations about personal safety. These conversations can be uncomfortable and awkward but necessary to help educate children and young people about their personal boundaries and strategies to protect themselves in unsafe situations, including when playing and socialising online.
More information about Day for Daniel can be found here.
St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal Launch
On Wednesday, 1st November, St Joseph's will host the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal Launch for 2023. Representatives from Vinnies conferences from across the city, together with staff and students from other Catholic schools and organisations will gather as Bishop Tim calls us to remember the birth of Jesus Christ and the call to give.
Joey's families and students are encouraged to donate nonperishable items during the Christmas Appeal. All of the donations will be presented to the Mary Help of Christians Parish during the end-of-year Mass.
Hope all have a wonderful few weeks,
Trina

Thank you to all the families who attended this year’s Joeys @ Sunset on the 26 August 2023. This year we aimed for a low key event in light of how busy this time of year is for everyone. It was a great chance to kick back, grab a bite from the amazing food trucks and catch up with friends while the kids played on the oval or danced away in the kids disco. Thank you to the amazing volunteers who helped make the afternoon the success it was. We have an amazing school and events like this are special opportunities to celebrate our Joey’s community!
