Dear Parents and Carers
It is hard to believe that we are at the end of another term and we certainly have had plenty to celebrate, with so many outstanding events throughout the term. Thank you again for your continued support of St Joseph's.
Recently I have been reading some incredible stories written by our students. As part of our literacy program classes have been working hard to develop engaging writing and this work has resulted in some amazing work created by our students.
This week I have included two pieces for you to enjoy, one from George in Year 2 and one from Ava in Year 4. These two were among many others that I have read, and found to be amazing. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
Next week is an incredibly busy week with multiple class events combined with our Eisteddfod performances. Please make sure to read through the newsletter and class communications so you are aware of all that is taking place in the next 5 days.
At this time of year we also begin preparations for the coming school year. This involves preparing class lists and staffing the school for the coming year. We also experience a high number of applications for places within our school. In order to assist us with this process, I would ask you to please advise us if your family will not be returning to St Joseph's in 2024. If you could please contact the office it would be greatly appreciated.
Have a great last week and good luck to all students participating in the Eisteddfod.

Mary, Mother of Jesus' Birthday
Today, 8th September is the feast of Mary, the mother of Jesus. We honour Mary as a spirit-filled person who listened to God speaking to her. Mary showed the love of God in the way she lived her life. She can inspire us all and show us how to be patient, kind, joyful and hope-filled people so we too can live out Jesus' message.
Child Protection Week
This week, our school community recognised Child Protection Week.
Child Protection Week is about raising awareness for each of our students on who to seek help from and developing an understanding of who in their community can be a trusted person.
Each of our classes engaged in a range of activities about keeping themselves safe and trusting their instincts.
Hope all have a wonderful and relaxing holiday,
Trina

Reflective Practice Day: Exploring English Spelling through Morphology
Last week, on a pupil-free day, our teaching team embarked on an exciting journey to delve into the history of the English language and how it affects the way we spell words today.
You might have heard people say that English spelling doesn't make sense, but it turns out there's a fascinating story behind it. English spelling evolved through a complex interplay of historical events like wars, politics, trade, and religion. Busting the myth that English spelling is completely random!
To help our students improve their spelling, expand their vocabulary, and enhance their comprehension skills, we'll be introducing sequenced morphology lessons. Morphology is all about understanding how words are formed and structured.
Did you know?
- English boasts the largest vocabulary of any language.
- Pronunciation of words changes over time, but spelling remains the same.
- The invention of the Printing Press had a significant impact on spelling, even leading to the addition of letters like 'e' at the end of some words, such as 'have.'
Our teachers have worked hard to create a structured learning plan for the school, focused on morphology. Stay tuned for more updates on our journey toward better spelling and language comprehension!

Reading and Writing in Prep
Prep students have been having a great time writing and reading. 'Celebrity Sentences' was a hit, with one student dictating the sentence and the other writing the words.
Look at the amazing sentences our Preps can write from a dictation!

Festival of Sport TCEO Gala Day
Our Festival of Sports Day was another resounding success. Our Year 6 students participated in an action-packed, fun-filled day of sport including; Netball, Basketball and Oztag. The emphasis was on demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and having fun in a team game. In Oztag, we had three teams with both of our boys teams doing a sterling job in their games. Our Girls team was triumphant, winning the final against a strong Ryan team. Our Netballers also improved with each game and showed great spirit, whilst enjoying themselves. Our Boys Basketball team made the final after winning four out of five games, going down to Ryan. Medallions were awarded for outstanding sportsmanship and St. Joseph's winners were; Charlie Ashfield, Ethan Chinsamy and Zoe Kennedy (Oztag), Mary Cato (Netball) and Aurelio Bonato (Basketball). A huge shout out to our amazing staff who gave tirelessly with their efforts. We look forward to our 2024 Festival of Sport events.
This week, our Readers Cup Team; Ava, Jaime, Brooke, Tristian and Louie travelled to Brisbane to compete in the state finals.
All had a wonderful time and were excited to be with peers who enjoy reading as much as they did. They were honoured to meet author, Deborah Abela throughout the competition.
Thank you to the team for their tireless efforts and dedication to reading over the past few months and to Mrs Paula Bennett, Ms Stevie Gear and Mrs Belinda Walker who have supported the team.
