Homeless Sleepout
On Friday, 18th August, a number of Joey's Year 6 Faith and Service group students participated in the Vinnies Homeless Sleepout with students and staff from Marian Catholic School and St Joseph's Mundingburra.
During the evening, our students learned alarming statistics of homelessness in Australia and the different forms and impacts of being homeless. They 'enjoyed' a meal of plain white rice and bread for dinner.
All the students worked together to create over 100 dignity packs to be distributed by St Vincent de Paul volunteers to families and adults within the Townsville community.
Thank you to all the families who donated products for the dignity packs.
Enhancing Catholic Schools Identity Project
On Wednesday this week, Joey's teachers worked with Ms Judy Bell from Townsville Catholic Education to analyse and understand St Joseph's Catholic Identity data. The data was gathered through student, staff and parent surveys in 2022.
The data is used to understand how Joey's can continue to deepen the presence of the Catholic faith and its symbols within our school community through symbols, actions and teaching.
Before teachers engaged in the session with Judy, they participated in meditative prayer in the revamped prayer garden using the mosaic images within the space for reflective contemplation.
Japanese Speech Competition
Last Friday, Joey's students from Years 4, 5 and 6 joined 147 students from other Townsville Catholic and independent primary and secondary schools for the 2023 Japanese Speaking Competition at Ryan Catholic College.
Each student presented a short, pre-prepared speech in Japanese, competing with over 15 of their same-aged peers.
Congratulations to Aria, Brooke, Isla, Ava, Caterina, Poppy, Evelyn, Sadie and Yebin on their extraordinary efforts and dedication. Thank you to Mrs (Sensi) Lipinski for preparing the Joey's team.
Altar Serving Training
All children who have completed their Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation) are invited to attend Altar Serving Training with Fr Jan and me on Thursday, 31st August.
The training will be held in the church until 4pm. Afternoon tea will be provided.
If your child is interested in becoming an altar server for parish and school Masses, please complete this form by Tuesday, 29th August.
Hope all have a wonderful few weeks,
Trina

Science Week
Last week, Joey's was shaken by the explosive energy of Science Week! Our science squad of teachers, Year 6 Environmental Science Pastoral group, Year Level Reps and brilliant individual scientists united to create a week of passion for science learning.
From bubbles that could rival a small child in size, to mastering the art of walking on eggs and launching rockets that left everyone astounded – lunchtime transformed into an awe-inspiring spectacle of scientific marvels.
Year 6 Environmental Science leaders led the way teaching key scientists from year Yr1-6 experiments to then teach the rest of the school. Our reps from Yr1-6 taught our school about how lungs work, light refraction, water pumps and filtration.
Our Library was transformed into a science den examining insects, rocks, dinosaur bones and liquid thermometers.
Guest scientists from Southern Cross Catholic College showed us how the colours are created in fireworks and how to create elephant toothpaste.
The science extravaganza continued with our budding 'Young Scientists' captivating the whole school with their experiments and expertise. The atmosphere was 'electric' as students presented their experiments to their captive audience during lunchtime.
