Dear Parents and Carers
Great to be back for Term 3! Another busy term ahead with a number of important events taking place over the coming weeks.
This week many of our students have been attending Mulkadee in preparation for tonight's performance of Robin Hood. Students and many of our instrumental teachers have been working with staff and students from across our diocese to bring together what will be an amazing performance. I know the students have had a wonderful week of fun, friendship and performing.
Last week our Yr 5 students attended camp at Gumburu in Paluma. It was an amazing few days, if a little cold, with some amazing experiences shared by our students. It was wonderful to see our students embrace unfamiliar situations and push themselves outside of their comfort zones to make the most of their time. A special thanks to Tori O'Connor who led our camp activities throughout the day and to the staff at Gumburu who always provide our students with an amazing experience. Thank you also to our teachers and teacher assistants who make these events possible for our students.
This term there are two reviews taking place that impact our school. The first is Validation. Validation is the final stage of our five year review process. An external team will visit on Wednesday the 2nd of August to finalise the work that began in 2022. Following this process we will be able to launch our next five year plan for St Joseph's. We look forward to welcoming our guests and to completing this review.
The second review is for Principal Appraisal. This process involves all within our school community. Over the next week you will be invited to complete a survey to provide feedback on my role as Principal. Surveys will be open for a two week period and the process will conclude toward the end of this term.
Next week we will celebrate Catholic Education Week. A number of activities are planned and this year the Queensland launch of this special event is taking place in Townsville. A number of our students will be involved in the launch celebrations on Tuesday next week.
Plenty of things happening so please take time to be aware of the many events coming in the next few weeks.
Have a great week
Tim
NAIDOC Week
This week, our St Joseph's community celebrated NAIDOC Week. We began the week with a whole school liturgy. This year's NAIDOC Week theme is For Our Elders. During the liturgy we recognised the wisdom and knowledge of all members of our community; our grandparents, our aunties and uncles and the ways they support us to learn and grow.
On Wednesday, we welcomed author Boori Monty Pryor. Boori shared his stories and experiences through dance and music. Kindy to Year Two students learnt the crocodile dance as described in Boori's book, 'Shake a Leg'. In Years 3 and 4, students danced as emus, cassowaries, snakes and crocodiles. Students in Years 5 and 6, spoke with Boori about his book, 'The Story Doctors', the injustices of the past and ways they can contribute to reconciliation.
We thank Boori for the wonderful opportunity to listen to his stories, dance and celebrate indigenous culture.
Throughout the week, students participated in activities to learn about, create and reflect upon the connections between Indigenous Australians and all Australians to the country.
Catholic Education Week
Next week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. This year’s theme is ‘Communities of Faith, Hope and Love'. This theme acknowledges the long tradition of Catholic education and its continued relevance in preparing students for the future.
Catholic Education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
This year, Townsville Catholic Education celebrates 150 Years. On Tuesday, 25th July student and staff representatives from across the Townsville Diocese will participate in a pilgrimage to Sacred Heart Cathedral from our school. Our Year 6 School Captains will attend Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Tuesday.
As a school, we will celebrate the week with a whole school liturgy on Wednesday, 26th July at 8:45am. All welcome.
First Eucharist
Congratulations to all Joey's students who are preparing to celebrate the sacrament of First Eucharist.
The Mass will be held on Sunday, 30th July.
A big thank you to the staff who helped prepare the students for the day.
Dear Lord, we thank You and praise You for the most precious gift of the Holy Eucharist. We ask You to bless all those who are preparing to receive Your Body and Blood for the first time. You have provided for us richly through the gift of Your Body and Blood in the Eucharist.
Hope all have a wonderful few weeks,
Trina
Young Speechmakers
Last term, our team of speechmakers took on Townsville's best public speakers from across the diocese.
Congratulations to Sofia (3rd place), Luca (Highly Commended), Harriet, Charlie, Isla and Ellie (Highly Commended) for all your effort and enthusiasm in putting together informative and interesting speeches.
Thank you to parents and Mrs de Lange, Mrs de Jongh, Miss Higgins and Miss Farrell for supporting students on their public speaking journey.
Literacy Development
Forget Taylor Swift tickets! We secured tickets to listen to and meet Professor Pamela Snow during the holidays. Professor Snow is a professor of Cognitive Psychology from La Trobe University and leading the charge with evidence-aligned pedagogies for literacy in schools.
During this workshop, we did a deep dive into the science of learning, reading and language and looked at the best practice to support students with literacy development.
On a scale of 1-10.....Miss Megan, Miss Lisa and Mrs Wallace rated this learning opportunity as an eleven and look forward to sharing learnings with staff.
Last term, we recognised students in our school community who espouse the Mercy Values of Love, Community and Excellence.
Congratulations to all!

St Joseph’s Athletics Carnival 2023
A spectacular morning greeted us for our annual St Joseph’s Athletics Carnival (Track). The carnival, held at the Townsville Sports Precinct, involved all children from Prep to Year 6 in a full program of sprints, 200 metres, 800 metres, relays and ball games. Congratulations to all children who participated in the events for your efforts and enthusiasm. There were many fine performances and great examples of St Joey’s children ‘doing their best’. Thank you to our Year 6 leaders for their team leadership with their house groups. The cheering this year was again inspiring.
With our Field Events (Long Jump, Shot Put and High Jump) completed the previous week, we were able to have our presentation at the Track event. This year we saw Ryan as our overall champions and Benjamin taking home the coveted Spirit Trophy. In the Year 6/Parent/Staff Relay a triumphant Faulkner were victorious, breaking the long drought for the students.
We had an unprecedented number of students who were unable to attend the carnival due to illness. Any of these students who were part of our Putney Interschool team in 2022, will be considered for selection in our 2023 team. There will be an opportunity for these students to have a race at school if needed for selection purposes.
Thank you to the many members of the St Joseph’s community – staff and parent helpers who gave generously of their time and talents to make our Athletics Carnival 2023 a success. I reinforce that the carnival would not be the success it is without the efforts of parents and staff who contribute so willingly. We look forward to our 2024 carnival and our Interschool Athletics Carnival held on Wednesday 9th August.
Nat Amoore: Our visit with the children’s author Nat Amoore was fabulous. Please ask your children to retell one of her amazing stories. Our library has several copies of her books for your child to read and will be motivated to see all the fun things she writes about. Some children will receive a photo with her soon.
Fletcher Buetel and Sam Parsons thanked her for her presentation on behalf of the school.
Book Week Theme: It’s the fun time of year where we can start thinking about dressing up as our favourite character for Book Week 25th August. The theme this year is ‘Read Grow Inspire with your favourite series character.’
Below are the year 2A students sitting under our new Book Week display reading their book club catalogues which must be ordered by this Friday.
Refer to the attached sheet for more information about Book Week.
Better Reads: Each year different organisations put out a flyer showing the top books purchased for the year. The attached list has a range of books suitable for Preps up to Year 6. Check it out. What have your kids read? We have most of them available at our library.

I want to pass on my congratulation to all the students, staff, families, volunteers and sponsors who made the 2023 Beachathon such a success! One thing I have come to learn is that the St Joey’s community is absolutely extraordinary when it comes to working together to achieve something special!
The collective efforts achieved such a wonderful result for our nominated beneficiaries St Vincent De Paul and ACT for kids, I thank all of you, for your role in that. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this amazing event during its 40th year!
