Dear Parents and Carers

In this 150th year of the school and parish it is also the 40th Anniversary of the St Joseph's Beachathon. Beachathon began as a fundraising event for the school at a time when schools needed to fund special projects to benefit students. In recent years the school has changed the purpose of Beachathon to give back to those in need, reflecting the work of the Josephite and Mercy sisters, reaching out to those most in need.

After discussion with members of the 150th committee, this year Beachathon will raise funds to support two local charities who work with families and children in need. Our goal is a formidable total, as we work to raise $40 000 in our 40th year. The funds raised will be equally divided between St Vincent de Paul and Act for Kids. All funds raised will remain locally and will support programs that provide invaluable assistance to children.

As part of the 150th Celebrations, I would like to personally invite you all to be a part of this special event. This includes being a part of the Beachathon Day and activities, supporting and working with the students, assisting with fundraising and celebrating our combined achievements.

Our students have prepared activities over the coming weeks and we would welcome your involvement and participation.

I am hoping that you will view this as an opportunity to join together in a special year of celebration to do something that will impact the lives of those who need our help the most. Our students are incredibly excited by the prospect of reaching out to others and I hope that you will consider being a part of Beachathon this year. Together, I believe we can accomplish something very special to mark this year.

Our P&F have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to secure prizes and sponsorship for this year's event. If you know of anyone who would like to be involved or who may like to donate to our fundraising, please contact the school office. Please be on the lookout for the student events in the coming weeks!

National Reconciliation Week

On Monday, 29th May we gathered as a school community to mark the beginning of Reconciliation Week. During the liturgy we were called upon to honour the work of generations past who fought for justice in Australia and to work together today to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation for generations to come.

Thank you to our students who led our liturgy beautifully and to our families who were able to join us.

Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is a religious Christian feast that is celebrated either the Thursday or Sunday after Trinity Sunday (60 days after Easter).

Corpus Christi, meaning ‘the body of Christ’ in Latin, celebrates the transubstantiation of bread and wine into the actual body of Christ during Mass.

In some countries, not only is the feast celebrated in Mass, Catholic communities parade the streets with the consecrated wafer as a public show that the sacrifice of Christ was for the salvation of the whole world.

Vinnies Blanket Drive

As the cooler weather continues across Townsville, Vinnies Refugee Assistance Program (VRAP) is looking for winter blankets and doona donations for refugee families in Townsville.

Donations can be dropped to the Vinnies Donation Hub, Woodman Court, West End. For more information call 4430 4002 or email vrap@svdpqld.org.au

Nat Amoore: I am so excited to have the author Nat Amoore visiting our school next week on Wednesday. She will be talking to years 3-6. I can assure you that most kids will be begging to read one of her books. Her books are so much fun and great to read together as a family. I have about 10 copies in the library to borrow.

Readers cup: I am so proud of this year’s reading team. They have been working hard to memorise the 5 books featured in the competition. They will be competing Tuesday 5.30pm June 13th. Good Luck Reading Knights.

Better Reading: When children are ready to read, the world of books opens up to them. There is a big choice which can be overwhelming. I encourage students to read a variety as we want them to have a good reading diet. Check out the attached flyer of the most popular books purchased in the last 12 months or look at this site of the greatest books of all time and how they were selected. These books are a must read in your childhood.

Reconciliation: In Prep-3 lessons we explored indigenous themes by reading a variety of books and responding with some amazing art. Their art culminated in this amazing rainbow serpent. Children were encouraged to borrow an indigenous book to read with their family at home as part of reconciliation.

North Queensland Trials

Congratulations to Mary Cato and Oliver Wolanski for their efforts at the NQ Tennis trials held in Home Hill. They both did extremely well, managing to make second reserves for the NQ team. From all accounts, they showed incredible determination, at times coming from behind for an upset win. Our school community is proud of your achievements.

Also, Elizabeth Griffiths has been selected in the Townsville Under 12 Schools Softball team. The North Queensland trials will be held in Townsville and we wish her all the very best of luck.
