Dear Parents and Carers
Well after all the preparations the weekend of the 150th celebrations is over. What an amazing weekend it was!
It began with the Meet and Greet on the Friday night which saw about 300 people attend to look through our memorobilia display and enjoy catching up with friends. It was lovely to meet many past students and staff and listen to stories of their time at St Joseph's.
Saturday morning saw many people again enjoy our school display and were then treated to personalised tours of our school by our Yr 6 leaders and teachers. The Gala Dinner at Quay Side was nothing short of spectacular and over 200 people enjoyed an amazing evening of fun, entertainment and great company.
On Sunday morning Bishop Tim Harris celebrated mass followed by a morning tea with families and parishioners. A huge weekend but an amazingly successful one for our school community.
This year of celebrations is historic and I hope that we can take time to appreciate how momentous this occasion was for our school community.
150 years isn’t just a number it is a legacy nurtured and forged by people of extraordinary character, dedicated, courageous and passionate people who believed in and worked toward their common purpose.
Today I wanted to take this chance to acknowledge you and your contribution to our school. Some of you have been long-standing members of our school community, some of you have only been here a short time, but in this moment, at this time I want to say thank you for all you do to continue the legacy of our school that began in 1873. Please remember and appreciate that what you do each and every day is not only part of a much larger story but it is the reason our school continues to be the incredible success it is at this time.
I hope that in years to come you will look back fondly on your time and be proud of the part you played in building our school’s legacy at an historic juncture. I hope you can appreciate that like so many that have been before us, you have worked together to build something amazing, something special, that in time will be handed on to others to continue.
A sincere thank you to all who were involved over the weekend.
Have a great week
Tim
Pentecost Sunday
This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost Sunday is celebrated 50 days after Easter. Pentecost Sunday commemorates the descent and gift of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Pentecost is regarded as the birthday of the Christian church, and the beginning of God's message to the world.
‘The word Pentecost comes from the Greek for the fiftieth day. In Jewish tradition the 50th day after the Passover was celebrated as a blessing of the harvest. It was for this reason that the disciples gathered together when they experienced the Holy Spirit empowering them. In Christian tradition, Pentecost is celebrated as the arrival of the Spirit promised by Jesus, which animated the disciples to spread the gospel of Jesus and gather believers to form what would eventually become the Church.’ (Greg Sunter)
Pentecost Sunday will be celebrated in each classroom with class prayer on Monday.
Feast of Pentecost
For the Spirit of Peace that calms our mind and stills our life,
we give you thanks.
For the Spirit of Love that touches hearts and reaches out,
we give you thanks.
For the Spirit of Joy that lifts our soul and gives us faith we give you thanks.
For the Spirit of Power, that gift of grace for this your church,
we give you thanks.
National Reconciliation Week
Today is National Sorry Day and leads into National Reconciliation Week. This week provides an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on their journey of reconciliation, including how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, languages, and knowledge systems are embedded in everyday practices.
The dates for National Reconciliation Week remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023, Be a Voice for Generations, encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.
For the work of generations past, and the benefit of generations future, let’s choose to create a more just, equitable and reconciled country for all.
Recent research shows large community support for the next steps in Australia’s reconciliation journey, including the Voice to Parliament, treaty-making and truth-telling.
This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, Be a Voice for Generations, urges all Australians to use their power, their words and their actions to create a better, more just Australia for all of us.
St Joseph's School will mark the beginning of National Reconciliation Week with a whole school liturgy on Monday at 2:20pm. All welcome to attend.
Hope all have a wonderful few weeks,
Trina

150th celebrations- History discovered: During our open school on Saturday morning I was privileged to meet Mrs Adrienne Branelly, the lady who had a dream for this school. While her daughters attended our school in the early 1970s she had the foresight and motivation to establish a library in our school. She volunteered her time for approximately 7 years until Paul Lucas employed Eileen Dalton, a qualified librarian. We have a had a wonderful history of literature loving librarians who kept our library evolving for children since 1970. Eileen was followed by Gail Kennedy in 1984 followed by Maureen Jones in 1986. I arrived in 2007 to follow in the footsteps of these wonderful woman. It is enlightening to understand the history and growth of an institution as so many have put their heart and soul into our wonderful library.
150 years of Reading Competition With the birthday celebrations of our school, children are invited to participate in the attached competition for a prize. What were Joeys staff members reading last century? Some of these titles are still in print today. The completed competition is due back to the Library on May 31st.
June Author Visit: We are so privileged to have an amazing author visit our school on June 14th to speak to years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Nat Amoore has written some wonderful books that the children are really enjoying. If your child is in year 3-6 check out the attached flyer to purchase one book from this amazing author. On the day she will autograph your books. In the meantime borrow her books from our library.
Top readers: To encourage year 1 to borrow and to get into a weekly routine they are being rewarded with a certificate and prize after they have borrowed 25 books. They may borrow 3 books each week.
Congratulations to these students and parents for being so organised.
Book Club: Children’s orders have arrived and will be handed out this week. If there are any issues see me straight away so we can sort it out.
A New Reading Spot: The year 4 girls are very excited to announce that there is a new reading spot in our school. A place to enjoy a book outdoors throughout the cooler months of the year.
Happy Reading
Belinda Walker (Teacher Librarian)
A tremendous weekend celebrating 150 Years of St Joseph's.
Thank you to all staff and committee members for their tireless effort and dedication in making the celebrations a great success.
A few snaps from the weekend.
Mercy Awards
On Wednesday, our Planet Warrior environmental group led our Laudato Si assembly to celebrate Laudato Si Week. Eight years ago, Pope Francis' wrote his encyclical; Laudato Si calling all people to make changes in the way we live, to think about these changes and to act upon them and to show care for our common home.
In his encyclical Laudato Si, Pope Francis lists seven actions needed to protect and care for the Earth and all creation;
Response to the Cry of the Earth - calls us to protect our common home for the good of all.
Response to the Cry of the Poor - calls us to protect human life and all forms of life on Earth.
Ecological Economics - calls us to make thoughtful decisions when we buy items and how this might impact the Earth.
Adoption of Sustainable Lifestyles - calls us to share Earth’s resources with one another so all have enough.
Ecological Education - calls us to educate ourselves and others.
Ecological Spirituality - calls us to discover God in all things - both beauty of creation and in the hearts of others.
Community Resilience and Empowerment - calls us to encourage communities to engage and participate in creating a change in the world.
During the assembly, students who espouse the Mercy Values of Love, Community and Excellence were recognised.

Interschool Cross Country Carnival 2023
Congratulations to all of our brave competitors that represented our school on Tuesday at the Townsville Primary Schools Cross Country Carnival. This is the only carnival in which all schools compete together at the same time at one place. Our school excelled at this carnival, with each competitor giving it their all on the long Bicentennial Park Course. This year incredibly surpassed our recent Interschool Cross Country Carnival results. We had 5 top ten finishes from our twenty three strong team. Amelie Vincent is the new 11 Years Girls champion of Townsville, after her 1st placing and Ivy Ryan was 8th. In the 11 Year Boys event, Cameron Dobbins was 3rd, Rocco Donovan 7th and William Travers 8th. Fifteen of our runners had top twenty finishes. These competitors now go through to the North Queensland Trials on Tuesday 30th May. Our whole Putney team deserves recognition for their outstanding achievements in representing St Joey’s. When you consider that all events had such a huge number of competitors, we achieved a great team result. They are simply the best.
