Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you for your continued support this term. It has been a highly successful one for our students and school community. I am grateful for the support of our dedicated staff and our parent representative bodies. It has been amazing to see so much achieved in a short amount of time.
I hope that the break is an enjoyable one for you and your families.
I found this article an interesting one to read, given we are headed into a hectic time of the year.
Have a great break.
Tim
Mission Month
Term 4 begins with Mission Month, also known as Socktober.
Socktober is a time that provides students in Australia with the opportunity to reflect upon the idea of mission in the world, encouraging them to think not only of what they will do to help but why they will do it.
In 2022, the focus country is Ethiopia. Although it is a beautiful and deeply historic place, Ethiopia's challenges, including conflict, poverty and famine, have troubled its people for centuries. Throughout Mission Month, Joey's students will learn about ways they can provide support for the children and families of Ethiopia.
Joey's students will be involved in a range of activities throughout October, including whole school meditation on Wednesday, 26th October for Children's Mission Day and Crazy Sock Day on Friday, 28th October.
The Year 6 Faith and Service group will be selling icy cups from Friday, 7th October to raise money for Socktober.
Father's Day
On Monday, 5th September our Year 1 students lead a liturgy to celebrate all the Dads, Grandads and significant others in our students' lives.
Thank you to our Year 1 students and teachers for leading this special liturgy and Joey's P and F for providing coffee for each of our Dads.
Farewell Fr Siby
On Wednesday, we farewelled Fr Siby. Fr Siby is leaving warm Townsville weather for the cooler weather of Melbourne. As a school community, we thank Fr Siby for joining us and celebrating many school events over the past three years.
We wish him well as he begins his pastoral life with his new parish.
I hope all families have a wonderful, safe and happy holiday.

Readers Cup Finals: Congratulations to our students Sienna, Audrey Georgia, and Daniel for making it to the state finals.
They worked so hard to be prepared for competing against the elite readers from around Queensland. As you can imagine every half point they gained made a difference. The 18 teams all came in with close results. More detail was what gave the two winning teams from Brisbane the edge. Our students should be very proud of their accomplishments. On the day they also got to meet authors Peter Carnavas and Gabrielle Wang which was a real treat. We also had a mini-cultural tour around the state Library and City square library. It was a very full day.
Book Week Wrap-up: This year book week celebrations proved to be lots of fun. Hopefully, we all had a chance of dressing up as our dream characters. We had lots of Roald Dahl characters as he certainly is an author that has been enjoyed by not only our children but their parents as well.
Our Junior librarians produced another fun Movie called Charlie and the book Factory which highlighted many of Dahls fabulous books.
We invited some Mystery Readers to read after our parade as a surprise novelty event. We had Steven Price from 4MMM and Courtney Wood from Townsville Fire and Yvette Starr from the Police force to name a few. We also had some staff and parent mystery readers visiting the classes.
Our Reading challenge before school on Thursday saw some students finding golden tickets to win a book prize.
Happy reading Celebrations.
Belinda Walker
Teacher Librarian
Dear Parents and Carers
What a busy and creative term for students across the music and technology learning areas.
Classroom Music
Our younger learners have had the opportunity to hear music and musical instruments from other cultures, including Indigenous Australians, and are continuing to develop their understanding of where and why people make music. Year 3 and 4 students have also considered how other art forms can provide inspiration for music compositions. Our year 5 and 6 students are finishing off their individual GarageBand compositions and are creating accompanying texts to provide a synopsis and to discuss their inspiration for their compositions. All year levels continue to explore and develop the elements of music, encompassing rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and tempo.
Instrumental Music
I am proud of the strong and vibrant instrumental music program at St Joseph's. The contribution of our tutors to the enrichment of each student's musical and educational journey is something I highly value. Information relating to our end-of-year virtual instrumental music concert will be sent out in week 1 of term 4.
Enroling in Instrumental Music for 2023
All students in years 2 to 6 are able to participate in the instrumental music program. As the program is popular, enrolments for 2023 places are now open. Information on the program, including fees, can be found on our website here. As the program is very popular, I encourage you to secure your child's place for 2023 as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Students in the program this year will also need to re-enrol for 2023. You can enrol your child using this form. Please reach out to me if you have any questions.
Technology
Year 4 and Year 6 students have been undertaking hands-on coding with our Lego EV3 robotics kits this term. This is always a highlight for students as they apply their theoretical knowledge of coding, sequencing of steps, and computational thinking. Year 4s are on a mission to the moon to clear a landing site and year 6s are combining various sensors to complete challenges, including a new take on hungry hippos! It is hoped to hold a robotics event in term 4 where students can compete in coding challenges with the Lego EV3s in robot soccer and line rescue missions.
I would like to thank the many parents that continue to support and encourage the opportunities in music and technology that our students undertake. I wish you all a safe and happy break and I look forward to seeing you in term 4 as we head towards Christmas.
Kind Regards
Jason Bennett
After a term of hard work learning and practising their dance moves, our Year 1 students were able to show their parents, families and Joey's students all they had learnt at the Ugly Bug Ball.
Click here to watch a short clip about the morning.
Thank you to Miss Megan and Mrs De Lange for their hard work and dedication in making this amazing event happen.
Once again this year, Joey's students had the chance to complete in the 72nd Townsville Eisteddfod. Each class performed a poetry piece in the Choral Speaking section. We are very proud our students have taken on this challenge and given their best in true Joey's spirit! Thank you to the hard work and dedication of our teachers also!
