Catholic Education Week
Last week, our Year Three students lead our celebration of Catholic Education Week.
Catholic Education Week is a time to reflect on the importance of being in one of the 313 Catholic Schools in Queensland with their distinctive mission and ethos. It is a great opportunity to look at what makes St Joseph's a great school.
To begin Catholic Education Week celebrations, our school captains Indiana, Audrey and Daniel attended the Catholic Education Week Mass at the Cathedral. It was celebrated with schools from across the Diocese and presided by Bishop Tim.

All demonstrations must be safe, quick and you must be able to explain the scientific information about the experiment.

TRAINING FOR OUR TEACHERS
We were very fortunate to take part in a training workshop this week run by a team of experts from the Reading and Writing Centre. The training examined current research that informs quality evidence-based reading instruction in the early years. Our team is looking forward to sharing our knowledge with all teachers in the upcoming weeks.
How can you help your child with reading and writing?
- Have conversations with your child that go back and forth a number of times. This helps your child to develop their vocabulary and 'hear' the way sentences are constructed. When your child writes, they connect the sounds (what they hear) to then write the squiggles on the page (letters/words).
- Expose your child to a variety of books - fiction and non-fiction. Talk about the interesting vocabulary in the book. Read a book a number of times as it assists vocabulary development. Your child needs to engage with a word 12 times to commit it to long-term memory.
- The most effective question type to support your child's comprehension of books is by asking 'why' questions. 'Why' questions allow your child to make inferences and connect parts of the text to each other. eg. Why did the dog bark? Why was the boy sad?
Have a nice weekend.
