Friday 16th September - Last day of Term 3
Welcome everyone to Term 3, we have certainly hit the ground running as we get back into routines on these cool winter mornings.
This week is NAIDOC Week at Joey's. We began the week with a whole school liturgy that remembered and celebrated the contributions and influences Indigenous culture has in Australian communities. During the liturgy, we made a pledge to get up, stand up and show up for the equality of all.
On Wednesday, we welcomed author Boori Monty Pryor. Boori shared his stories and experiences through dance and music. Kindy to Year Two students learnt the crocodile dance as described in Boori's book, 'Shake a Leg'. In Years 3 and 4, students danced as emus, cassowaries, snakes and crocodiles. Students in Years 5 and 6, spoke with Boori about his book, 'The Story Doctors', the injustices of the past and ways they can contribute to reconciliation.
We thank Boori for the wonderful opportunity to listen to his stories, dance and celebrate indigenous culture.
Hope all have a wonderful few weeks,
Trina
Science Week - (15th August - 19th August)
Last year we were amazed by the level of enthusiasm by our students with Science Week. This year students will again have the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and talents. Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks regarding how your child can be involved.
Science Week - Parents/Carers Knowledge
Our parent community is very diverse at Joey's. If you have a skill/talent/resource related to Science that you think could be showcased please contact me jwallace@sjnwtsv.catholic.edu.au
Camp
Year 5 students attended school camp last week at Gumburu Paluma. Faced with single-digit temperatures and armed with beanies, they climbed, trekked and bonded. Camp is an experience unlike any other. Students shine in unpredictable ways making camp a highlight for teachers and students.
Help required with Book Covering
Can you spare some time to help us cover our new decodable readers? We are starting the mammoth covering on Friday 29th July at 2pm in the library. All help will be greatly appreciated to help cover over 1000 new books to assist Joey's students with reading.
Semester Reports
Last week, Semester One Reports were published via Compass. If you haven't had a chance to look at your child's report, please follow the below instructions.
Have a lovely weekend.

2022 Rugby Gala Day
Congratulations to both St. Joey’s Rugby Union teams who participated in the annual Rugby Gala Day at Hugh Street. St. Joseph’s capped off a successful day with both of our teams triumphant in their grand final games. Our mighty juniors defeated St. Clare’s 20-10. The seniors were victorious also in their grand final in defeating Currajong SS 20 - 5 in a come-from-behind win. All players in both teams deserve credit for the way they conducted themselves, showing great team spirit and sportsmanship. William Travers and Will Donovan were awarded prizes as standout players for their respective teams. A big thanks to our helpers on the day; Mrs Wheeler, Mrs Parry, Mrs Finlay and supercoach Mr Finlay who did a superb job in marshalling the senior team. Their efforts were greatly appreciated by our students. This memorable day has become a feature on the Townsville Primary School Sports calendar.
Congratulations to Elsie Reeve who won the Townsville City Council Short Story Competition ~ Children's Section.
This year's theme was 'In My Backyard'.
Read Elise's moving short story 'That Day' published with other short story competition winners for 2022.
Our Year 4's are sharing their learning and activities from last semester.
Thank you to Ms De Jongh and Ms Bridgette for the wonderful learning opportunities.
Book Week Task: Children have to find a book with a character they dream they were like. It must be a character they can relate to. They are also asked to bring the books where their character is from on the day so they can share or read them with friends. Our author focus for Book Week is Roald Dahl as his clever whimsical books are so fantastical one would believe you were in a dream.
School Play: Our play staring our Junior librarians is Charli and the Book Factory. Throughout August the library will turn into a Book Factory where children can explore their writing and creating of stories.
Book Week Competitions: Students in Years P-6 will be invited to participate in a DREAM reading photo competition. What is your dream place to read or what is your dream book to read?
The second competitions will be announced in class. P-4 will fill in and decorate a golden ticket. Year 5/6 are encouraged to create a book trailer of their favourite book.
Year 1 Borrowing Awards: Congratulations to the children who have received certificates for borrowing and reading 25 books to date. The next challenge is to get to 50 books borrowed for a prize: a free book. Children may borrow 3 books each week.
Boori Pryor: During Naidoc week we have been reading Books written by this fabulous indigenous author. Please ask kids to borrow them so they can share the inspiration he gave them on Wednesday when he spent an hour with each class.

Congratulations to all students, staff and families involved in BEACHATHON 2022.
This year's theme was STEP I.T. UP which certainly happened with Joey's families raising over $30000 for new I.T resources and innovative teaching tools for classrooms.
A collection of photos from the day.
Here's to Beachathon 2023!
Catholic Education Week is an annual state-wide event that promotes the distinctive mission of Catholic schools throughout Queensland.
The week 25th - 31st July is celebrated by all schools through a range of liturgies, events and activities.
The Catholic Education Week 2022 theme is " Communities of Faith, Hope and Love".
A Mass to mark the official launch of Queensland Catholic Education Week 2022 will be held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Townsville on 25th July 2022 and in the Archdiocese of Brisbane on Tuesday 26 July 2022, both are live-streamed and links are available on the Townsville Catholic Education Facebook page.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
We invite all members of the school and parish community to the school's Catholic Education Week liturgy on Wednesday, 27th July at 9:15am to celebrate together this significant event as a Community of Faith, Hope and Love.
