Dear Parents and Carers
While it has been a busy term it has been another highly successful one for our students and community. Beachathon today was an amazing way to finish off a highly successful term. An enormous thank you to our sponsors, our P&F, our staff and our students for what was an awesome day. The students have raised over $31 000 for this year's projects. Incredible. I am very grateful for the many weeks of work that have gone into the 2022 Beachathon.
I would also like to congratulate our Rugby Union players who attended the Gala day today. Both our junior and senior teams won their division and came home with the trophies. Congratulations to all our players and coaches.
I hope that all families enjoy the mid-year break. It has been a hectic six months with many interruptions, but I am very proud of the way our school community has pulled together and achieved so many great results. The break will certainly be a welcome one, but I am looking forward to another wonderful term when we return.
If you are travelling, please take care over the break. I look forward to seeing you all again for Term 3.
Kind regards
Tim
Dear Parents and Carers
What a fabulous term it has been for music at St Joseph's!
Classroom Music
In classroom music, students have explored many of the elements of music including rhythm, tempo, dynamics, pitch, and form, and students in years 2 to 6 have created their own short pieces of music using an online platform called Chrome Music Lab. As an educator, what I find most inspiring and rewarding is when young people use the skills and knowledge they have developed in class and drawn upon these to create and collaborate. I look forward to continuing to guide our students through music education in the second half of the year. With an exciting music creation and publishing project planned, terms 3 and 4 will provide more enriching and educational music opportunities for St Joseph's students.
Choir
Led by the talented Mrs Bennett, the choir has added another strong element to the musical program at our school. Students are learning about musicality, vocal warmups, and protecting and caring for their voices, as well as the fun of singing together as a group. For those who attended the instrumental music concert last Thursday, I am sure you would join me in congratulating our choir members and Mrs Bennett on their performance. Keep an eye out for more choir appearances over the coming months.
Instrumental Music
Last Wednesday and Thursday evenings, our two instrumental music concerts took place in Putney Hall. As the instrumental music program has grown incredibly strong over the last 2 years, we had a large number of young people sharing their gift of music with the school community over these 2 nights. Featuring pianists, singers, guitarists, bassists, drummers, and saxophonists, these concerts were a wonderful opportunity for St Joseph's musicians to perform in a supportive and appreciative environment. A particular performance at the end of the Wednesday night concert reminded all in attendance how music brings people together and is able to lift those who may be nervous or shy. A true St Joeys moment that demonstrated Love, Community, and Excellence, in one performance. Well done to all musicians that performed and thank you to all parents and carers for supporting their journey.
Mulkadee
Mulkadee 2022 - Into the Unknown, is being held in week 2 of term 3 (Monday 18th to Friday 22nd July) at the Townsville Entertainment Centre. I am proud of the 22 students in years 4 to 6 who have been accepted into this annual youth arts festival. St Joseph's will be represented in the guitar ensemble and the choir at this year's event. For more information on Mulkadee 2022, visit the site at this link. Tickets are selling fast so I would encourage you to consider heading over to the box office link and purchasing your tickets today and supporting the Arts in our diocese.
Thank you
As we approach the winter mid-year break, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our talented instrumental music tutors for their dedication and professionalism, Paula Bennett for her guidance of the choir, and our principal, Tim Ham for his continued support of the music program at St Joseph's. Lastly, thanks to the school community for their encouraging words and support of the music program at our great school. The feedback from our recent concerts has been overwhelmingly positive and I look forward to seeing everyone in term 3. Have a safe and blessed holiday.

Athletics@Joeys
Last week we completed our Athletics@Joeys field events. Firstly, on Thursday our students 9 -12 Years participated in High Jump in the hall. Our indoor venue replicates the interschool HJ surface and our students enjoyed the opportunity to put the skills gained in PE into practice. Friday saw the Shot Put and Long Jump events held on our oval. Our groundsman Ben had our venue in perfect condition to host our competitors. A special thanks go to Miss O’Connor and Ben for their efforts in ensuring everything ran smoothly. The presentation ceremony followed our field events, with yellow Faulkner having the distinction of winning both the Spirit and Overall Points trophies. Ryan and Benjamin are to be commended on their outstanding efforts also.
Our Putney Athletics team will participate in the Interschool Carnival on Tuesday 9th August (Week 5, Term 3) at the Townsville Sports Precinct. More information about the team and training will follow.
North Queensland Representatives
St. Joey's has had some extremely talented students representing their various sports at Queensland championships recently. Zahara Hughes and Lucy Whelan did a magnificent job in chilly Ipswich at the Qld Schools Hockey championships.
Congratulations Lucy on being selected as the shadow player in the Queensland team.
Just down the road in Brisbane, Quaid Smith was also representing NQ at the Queensland Schools Touch Football carnival. We are very proud of these students who did themselves and their region proud.
Readers Cup
Congratulations!! Our Team ‘Reading Knights’ has won the regional Reader’s Cup competition and are off to Brisbane in August. Here is the moment they actually heard that their team had won by one point. Ryan catholic school came 2nd and Southern Cross Catholic School came 3rd. To win a competition in reading is to validate the reading culture at our school which takes a whole community to develop. Thank you to you our parents who help develop a love of reading at home. So please wish our students Sienna Pietrobon, Georgia Myles, Daniel O'Brien, and Audrey Burbidge all the best in Brisbane at the state competition. More information about the competition can be found at readerscup.org.au
Does your child love to read? Don’t give up. I will let you into a secret. One of my children struggled with reading and didn’t really read independently until he was in year 5. I’m telling you this because it is always possible. If you want some tips on finding a book that your child will love; drop into the library before school on Fridays.
Book Week
In Term 3, Wednesday 24th August we are having a literary celebration whereby students can dress up as their favourite book character. The theme this year is ‘Dreaming with eyes open’. In library lessons we will be focusing on Roald Dahl as one of the wonderful authors that suits this theme. More information will come next term.
Happy Reading
