Refugee Week
In 2022, Refugee Week will be held from Sunday, 19th June to Saturday 25th June.
The theme is Healing.
Refugee Week aims to raise awareness about issues affecting refugees. It promotes harmony and togetherness within communities.
The theme of healing speaks to Australians and the rest of the world that we have an opportunity to reset the button on how we behave towards each other. Communities can come together to share their stories of hardship, to learn from each other and realise the connections we have as people.
Our students will come together to pray on Monday, 20th June.
Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office
invites all to participate in an online prayer service to pray for asylum seekers and refugees on
Monday 20th June at 6pm
Please register here
Hope you all have a wonderful few weeks.

North Queensland Cross Country Trials 2022.
Congratulations to our four incredible Cross Country runners who participated in the North Queensland Primary Schools Cross Country Championships. Amelie Vincent (3rd), Ivy Ryan (4th), Rocco Donovan (3rd) and Lucy Whelan (10th) all did an amazing job. Amelie, Ivy and Rocco will now represent NQ at the Qld Cross Country Championships held on the Gold Coast. We wish them all the very best on their journey.
St Joseph’s Athletics Carnival 2022
A chilly Winter morning greeted us today for our annual St Joseph’s Athletics Carnival (Track). The carnival, held at the Townsville Sports Precinct, involved all children from Prep to Year 6 in a full program of sprints, 200 metres, 800 metres, relays and ball games. Congratulations to all children who participated in the events for your efforts and enthusiasm. There were many fine performances and great examples of St Joey’s children ‘doing their best’. Thank you to our Year 6 leaders for their team leadership and inspiration to their house groups. The cheering this year was again inspiring.
Thank you to the many members of the St Joseph’s community – staff and parent helpers who gave generously of their time and talents to make our Athletics Carnival 2022 a success. I reinforce that the carnival would not be the success it is without the efforts of parents and staff who contribute so willingly.
We now have our field events; High Jump (Thursday), Long Jump and Shot Put (Friday) at Joey’s. Please see the program of events in the newsletter.

Readers Cup
This Regional reading competition is being held next week June 14th. Our Team ‘Reading Knights’ has been hard at work meeting most days to talk about the 5 books that they will be quizzed on. They are amazing with the detail they can remember from each book. Best of Luck Sienna, Georgia, Daniel, and Audrey.
Reconciliation Week
Lessons in the library focused on the theme ‘Be brave make a change’ for reconciliation week. Here are some snapshots of the Year 1's after reading Tiddalick the frog who drank all the water. Students had to retell the indigenous tale on their story boards.
Congratulations to the students last week who decided to be ‘brave and make a change’ by borrowing an indigenous themed book to learn about our nations first peoples and their perspectives.
Year 1 Reading Certificate
Today Year 1 students who had borrowed 20 books or more this year were awarded a certificate for excellent borrowing. Students are encouraged to borrowed 2-3 books each week to take home and read with their parents. Being read to daily helps develop literacy skills, the foundation of learning. A gold medal went to Thea and Claire for being the highest borrowers in their year level.
Junior Librarians
At assembly I awarded our fabulous Junior librarians with their badges. They continue to volunteer their time to organize lunch activities in the library plus they assist students and encourage class mates to borrow books. So grateful for their time and enthusiasm.
Book Week
In Term 3 we have a literary celebration whereby students can dress up as their favourite book character. The theme this year is ‘Dreaming with your eyes open.’ In library lessons we will be focusing on Roald Dahl as one of the wonderful authors that suits this theme. More information will come next term.
Happy Reading

THE CLAW MACHINE
Without a doubt, your child has come home in the last few days talking about 'The Claw Machine'. Over the next few weeks, our students are being recognised for their efforts by earning coins for their class. Once enough coins have been earned, a class representative takes on the claw machine, in the hope, that they will earn their class a prize.
Prizes include an extra-long lunch break, Zooper Doopers, lunch with Mr Ham, disco in the hall, crazy hair day and free dress day. The first round of prizes were earned on Thursday. Your child's teacher will email details about activities when needed.
We thank Wackadoo Entertainment for their generous donation of the claw machine.
