Dear Parents and Carers
What a busy few weeks it has been for our students and families. It was wonderful to see so many of our mums and mother figures attend our Mother's Day functions. We hope that you enjoyed them and your weekend. A huge thanks to our P&F and all the volunteers who made these possible. Thanks also to Mrs Neilson for the liturgy and Mrs Curley in the tuckshop for the delicious breakfast.
Over the past two weeks, we have been busy meeting our prospective Preps for 2023. It has been great to meet with families and students to talk about our school and the prospects that 2023 holds for our community. We are looking forward to our new families joining our community in 2023.
It is great to have Beachathon back again this year. Once again our students were up to the challenge of creating our Beachathon Logo. Very happy to announce that our winner for 2022 was Sophie Boyle! It was a difficult choice for our students, with so many amazing entries to choose from on the day. Congratulations Sophie on your wonderful design.
This year we have begun the process to redesign our school logo. This is one of the last items to complete on our five-year improvement plan. With the 150th year celebrations taking place in 2023, this will be a wonderful opportunity to connect our school logo with our current community and into the future. In order for our logo to be relevant to our school and our Catholic identity, and to ensure it helps tell the story of St Joseph's The Strand, we are conducting consultation sessions with staff, parents and students to ensure we are able to reflect key elements of our school.
We are hoping that some parents and carers may be able to join us on Wednesday 18th of May at 8:30am for a coffee and a brief discussion about what features define our school. The discussion should take around 20 minutes. The meeting will take place in the school staffroom. If you are able to assist your help would be greatly appreciated.
Have a great week.
Tim
Mother's Day
Thank you to all the Mums, Grandmothers and significant others who were able to join us on Monday morning to celebrate all the wonderful things Mums bring to our families.
A special thanks to Arlene Curley, Selena Gilmore, Paula Bennett and the Year 6 Arts Group and the P and F and Year 2 students for their efforts to make the morning special for all.
Two of our Year Six students, Audrey and Daniel have composed news articles about the morning.
Smothering our Mothers!
On Monday, 9th of May the wonderful mothers of our school all gathered in the hall to watch the Year 2’s perform their spectacular liturgy. The liturgy included a wonderful story by Janell Cannon called Stellaluna. The story is about a bat who loses her mother and then reunites with her in the end. Mrs Neilson and many of the other teachers and students went to great trouble to put this delightful liturgy together to honour the mothers of St Joseph’s and thank them for all the wonderful things they do for their children.
Mothers were very satisfied with the scrumptious croissants, cooked by Mrs Arlene and coffee for mothers and grandmothers. Mrs Bennett and the Arts Group performed some breathtaking songs like Mamma Mia and other ABBA songs! Mrs Bennett revealed that “Jolene is a mother’s favourite!” before playing the catchy song! The mothers and grandmothers enjoyed taking photos with their children. Mrs Neilson stated that she was “delighted with the number of mothers who enjoyed the morning and had special photos taken with their children!”
In the end, the Mother’s Day liturgy was very enjoyable. The mothers and grandmothers will be raving about the croissants, coffee, music and beautiful liturgy for a very long time and I’m sure all the fathers are dying for Father’s day to come along.
One mother of a Mothers Day at Joey’s.
As our mothers are a very important part of all of our lives, Joeys decided that they need a special mothers day breakfast. All our Mothers enjoyed themselves at Joey’s Mothers Day breakfast and liturgy. Early in the morning at around 7:30 on the 9th of May, our Mums were pulled out of bed getting ready for the delicious Mothers Day breakfast. When they arrived the delicious wafting smells of croissants and warm coffee pulled the mums closer. As they sat down they were greeted by amazing music from Mrs Bennett and the Arts Group including a few special volunteers like Zahara Hughes and Daniel O’Brien.
Mrs Bennett gave the crowd of mums a classic saying, “ Jolene is always a mum’s favourite.” The Arts group also sang some classical ABBA songs from Mamma Mia. Mrs Neilson also stated that she was “ delighted with the number of mothers who enjoyed the morning and had special photos taken with their children”. At the liturgy later in the day, the Year twos kicked it off by telling the story of Stellaluna, representing a mother's love to their children. Many mums commented that “This was the best Mothers Day breakfast ever” and “Can’t wait till next year.”
All in all, I think all mums are so excited for next year when they can be greeted once again by warm coffee. Hopefully, Joey’s is thinking of making this a school tradition. Now not to beat around the bush but Year 6 knows that the others are waiting for their time to shine hoping that they get the same special treatment that all the mums did.
More photos from the morning can be found here.

Mass in the Church with Fr Siby
This term, classes will once again celebrate Mass with Fr Siby in the church.
Mass is the most important ceremony and form of worship in the Catholic Church. The Eucharist is thought to be the most important part of Christian life because that is when the blood and body of Christ is received in the form of bread and wine.
Participating in Mass provides our students with links to the daily practice of prayers within their classrooms and the current Religious Education curriculum.
Our Year 4 students will celebrate Mass on Monday, 23rd May at 2pm.
All are welcome to join.
NAPLAN
Students in Years 3 and 5 began NAPLAN tests this week. NAPLAN is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. Students have completed three tests and have one more to complete on Tuesday 17th May (Numeracy).
We are very fortunate at Joey's to have expert teaching teams who have prepared students for these assessments with a meaningful approach to testing and a can-do attitude.
Students are reminded of the wise words of Year 6 student Sophia Boyle:
We've been taught this,
I've got this!
Let's do this!
The Amazing Race - Friday 20th May
Year 3 and Year 5 students will be involved in Joey's Amazing Race. The Amazing Race will see teams compete against each other to solve mathematical problems, answer riddles and solve puzzles. To add a new dimension to the race, parents of Year 3 and Year 5 students will be invited to test their mathematical skills and race against the students. Who will be this year's winners of the Golden Boot? More details will be emailed to parents of Year 3 and 5 children.
Prep Reading and Writing
Learning to read and write has been so much fun in prep. Our new program (Sounds-Write) to support students with reading and writing has been so exciting and engaging for our prep students. Students are beginning to write multiple words which will lead to sentence writing.
Last week we celebrated students within our school community who espouse our values of Love, Community and Excellence.
We were very proud to recognise the efforts of these students.

Logo Masters
Two weeks ago the challenge was set. A designer was wanted for the "Step I.T Up" logo.
With over 120 entries and 52 finalists... how could we decide?
The solution was easy ....Kids can STEP IT UP to decide!
Year 6 Pastoral Leaders set up the hall ready for the voting to begin. Voters were armed with a piece of lego to place in the corresponding logo's box....but beware security (Yr 6) was watching to make sure this was a legitimate vote.
CONGRATULATIONS
The logo design was voted upon and decided.
Congratulations to Sophia from Year 6 for creating the winning logo design.
Beachathon 2022 officially launches on 25th May.
Stay tuned for more information.
