Dear Parents and Carers
I saw the title of this article and was immediately excited hoping that there was something in there that I was unaware of that would instantly help me have more energy. At this time of year I think that we all feel the drain of a busy year, stress from multiple sources and the increasingly busy lives we lead. While the article didn't exactly give me the instant fix I was looking for, it certainly challenged me.
As the article suggests, gratitude is a powerful motivator. It is something we need to practice and in itself is a great way to find the reason we need to get going. I hope you find something in the article that resonates with you.
In the coming week I am hoping to announce a project that will provide our community with the opportunity to appreciate what we have and to be able to extend that gratitude to others.
Have a great week.
Tim
Praying the Rosary with Fr Siby
This week, our students went to St Joseph's Church to pray two decades of the rosary with Fr Siby. Each of the students made their own set of 11 beads to help when praying the rosary. The beads help count the prayers and tells us which prayer to say; the 'Our Father' or 'Hail Mary'. Thank you to Mila Esposito and Sofia Coppola who led praying the Hail Mary in Spanish and French.
Mission Week
Next week, students will be involved in activities to raise awareness and funds for Mission Week. Students are invited to make a sock ball, guess how many lollies are in the jar. On Friday, students can wear CRAZY, COLOURFUL socks for a gold coin donation and test out their sock ball.
Our whole school will come together for Mission Week Liturgy on Wednesday, 21st October at 8:45am. All families are welcome to join us.
Day for Daniel
Day for Daniel will be held at Joey's on Friday, 29th October. Students and staff are encouraged to wear RED to school on this day. Day for Daniel is a great opportunity for families and teachers to hold conversations about personal safety. Throughout the day, classes will participate in lessons about the 3 R's for child safety; recognise, react and report.
More information about Day for Daniel can be found on their website.
Hope all have a wonderful week,
Trina
This week, we recognised students who live out the Mercy Values in their everyday actions. Congratulations to these students.
Love If the love of God really reigns in our heart, it will show itself on the exterior. Catherine McAuley |
Markus Bourne | Markus is such a patient and kind student. At the Tech Expo, he willingly gave up his place to a prep student for most of the event. Markus guided the preppie through some basics of Lego WeDo and then gave up his time to let him explore. Markus, you are an inspiration to others at St Joseph’s. |
Tahliah Webster |
Tahliah is someone who is inclusive and always on hand to help those in need. She has a welcoming smile and always supports others feeling lonely or sad. Tahliah puts other people before herself. She is thoughtful and considerate of others. Tahliah is a true leader of our school. |

Community
No matter how small the gift, God gives the increase. Catherine McAuley |
Tyler Candy |
Tyler always goes above and beyond his responsibility of keeping the school looking clean and tidy. In the classroom, he consistently uses his initiative to straighten things up and pick up rubbish. Tyler offers to help bring in sporting equipment and look after our school environment. |
Hunter Walsh | Hunter is a very helpful member of the class. He is always the first to volunteer to assist with whatever is needed to be done. The times where Hunter really shines is at break times. Instead of just grabbing his lunch and heading downstairs, he checks that everyone has their lunch and will follow up and connect any lunch boxes left behind with their owner. Congratulations Hunter, we are so lucky to have you as part of our 2B family!
Excellence We can never say, ‘it is enough.’ Catherine McAuley |
Caitlyn Wiltshire | Caitlyn has displayed a very high knowledge of music theory during Music lessons. She is always enthusiastic about challenges presented to her and often assists others with tasks. Caitlyn consistently puts in her very best efforts to sing, create and perform. |
Lola Hamilton | Lola has been working extremely hard in class to improve her handwriting, counting and reading. She uses all her focus and determination to complete her work and shows excellence in her daily activities.
Tech Expo Experts |
All of our fine young learners who willingly gave up their time to be an expert at the Tech Expo and to share their knowledge with the school community is a wonderful example of excellence. Not only did they manage their time at their assigned booth, but they took their passion and joy around the hall with them when visiting other booths. St Joseph’s School is extremely proud of them all. |
Queensland Touch Football Championships
Our very own Harper Ryan is participating in the Queensland Schools Touch Football championships this week. The championships are held at Queens Park fields here in Townsville. We wish Harper all the very best at the carnival.
Swimming Lessons P - Year 3
Our Prep-Year 3 Swimming lessons were off to a great start last Friday. Lessons will be undertaken every Friday, 8/10 (Week 1) to 19/11 (Week 7). Students will have a supervised walk to the pool each week. It would be greatly appreciated if some parents were able to assist with this walk. Please contact your child's classroom teacher if you are able to help out. The cost of the lessons will be included in Term 4 school fees. We trust that our swimming lessons will be an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for everyone involved. We thank Luc Senent from Tobruk Pool and his dedicated coaches for ensuring our students are afforded this wonderful opportunity. The timetable for lessons can be found here.
T20 Blast Cricket (Year 1 -3
We are once again fortunate to have been awarded a federal government Sporting Schools Grant. This term, students in Years 1 - 3 will benefit from having specialist Cricket coaches (Qld Cricket) providing skills in throwing, catching, fielding, bowling and batting. This will be an invaluable opportunity to learn new skills in fun, game-based lessons. The clinics will be conducted on Wednesdays (October 27, November 3, 10, 17, 24). These lessons will compliment the existing PE lessons provided at Joey's.
Rookies Basketball Program
We are pleased to announce that St. Joey's will continue the tradition of providing an after school Rookies Basketball program (Prep-Year 6) in our school hall in Term 4. Townsville Basketball offers an opportunity to learn the basics of Basketball in a fun and safe environment. The program will run for 5 weeks on Mondays (25/10 - Monday 22/11). More information (cost, finish time etc) will be provided in next weeks newsletter. This has proven to be a very popular program for our students.

Book Club
This is our last order for the year. Please have all orders in by Monday 25th October. If possible I would like all orders completed online as this ensures that all orders have a name and the right amount of money. Thank you.
Book Club Voucher winners
Last term some students won a book club voucher. They may use it for this book club round. They will have to do an order through the library not online.
Library borrowing guidelines
Children are allowed to borrow 3 books and if they are avid readers I usually allow them to have more. Junior librarians can borrow up to 6 books.
If children have a missing book they still can borrow until they find it. Parents please ask your child to come and check what they have out rather than guessing. Sometimes a missing book may be found and returned without your child knowing.
Borrowing days
Monday Year 6, Wednesday Year 5, Thursday - Prep, Years 3 & 4, Friday- Years 1 & 2. Other than lesson times children also can borrow at lunchtime as there are Year 6 students able to help out.
Junior Librarians
This term the junior librarians are busily organizing activities for our students at lunchtime. There will be craft on Mondays, Thinking Tuesday with Quizzes, Mime on Wednesday, Lego and Kirigami on Thursday and Storytime on Friday. The library is still open Friday.
Class in the spotlight
Prep students Lola Lombardi, Elliot Olsen and Joshua Fletchett acting out the Pamela Allen story ‘Belinda”.
Commonsense media: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ This organization reviews what your kids want to watch before they watch it. It reviews films, books, games, and apps for children aged 2 and up. It does have an American slant but definitely has some useful information including some research reports and surveys. It also has an education section with some cyber safety tips and activities.
Happy Reading (using the original invention)
