For many of us, reading is a great pastime, perhaps even a luxury. Reading for pleasure can be a great distraction from the busyness of life.
This week we celebrated CBCA’s National Book Week with many events organised by our dedicated Librarian, Mrs Belinda Walker and the Junior Librarians.
Students participated in literary quizzes and book character treasure hunts across the school. Our parents were invited to read books and enjoy a coffee before school; however, the biggest highlight of the week was the annual St Joseph’s Book Week parade.
On Wednesday, the hall was filled with excitement and energy and many, many well-known book characters. There was even an appearance by Dorothy, the Wicked Witch and the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz. All had a wonderful time. The morning ended with buddy reading with our older students reading books to our younger students.
Some tips to help children become readers are:
- Set a good example - be caught in the act of reading
- Make sure your child has a bedside table and lamp
- Have a book (rather than a phone or device) handy for any time your child needs to wait.
Thanks to Mrs Walker and her helpers for promoting and celebrating the love of reading.
Father's Day Liturgy
Father's Day is a time for people to celebrate the men in their lives. For children, it is a day to show appreciation of their fathers and father figures. As a school, we will be recognising all of the father figures with a Father's Day liturgy next Wednesday 1st September at 8:45am.
Wattles and Wagtails Coffee Cart will be making coffees for our fathers and father figures on Wednesday morning from 7:30 am.
Hope you are able to join us.
Pupil Free Day
A reminder that Friday, 3rd September is a pupil-free day. St Joseph's staff will be participating in a range of professional learnings.
White Balloon Day
On Friday, 10th September students and staff are encouraged to wear white to raise funds and awareness during Child Protection Week. For a gold coin, students can wear white to school.

Book Week
Each day the children have been engaging with a literary activity.
Our family morning reads have been a wonderful success.
Elli Torrisi said ‘There was so much happening during book Week: Find the book character treasure hunt; Read with your parents and of course the parade which is my favourite thing because I can use my imagination. It was great that parents could come this year. It was amazing to finally see the movie that Mrs Walker made with us. I enjoyed being the stage manager while they were filming.’
There have been 3 treasure hunts around the school. Here are the preps doing the story garden treasure hunt.
Every day each grade has been invited down to the library for some reading games and prizes. Here are the winners.
The literary lunch was very special. Our best borrowers who take time to use the library on a regular basis were invited to the library to have lunch and a fun game to acknowledge their dedication to our library. Congratulations to Sam, Sarah, Caterina, Sadie, Ava, Marcus, Charlie, Stella, Arabella (3A), Arabella (3B), Asha, Stella, Elizabeth, Harlow, Matt, Tristan, Chloe, Georgia, Ayoola, Indiana, Lynette, Kareena, Estella and Caitlyn.
Book Week Parade: The children and staff had a truly magical morning with parading, the flash mob and the macarena followed by our mini movie “The Library of Oz”. Every child enjoyed their New World day in the shoes of their favourite character. Lots of great book-inspired conversations were had.
The year 4s have written their impressions of the day.
Ethan Kelly wrote: I entered the hall seeing lots of other world characters. I was greeted by the Wizard of Oz. At my side was Alex rider and some British army people. We paraded the hall with my saucepans clattering and clanging all the way.
Digby Thomas wrote: Book Week was awesome. The best event was the treasure hunt.
Ellie Guilfoyle wrote: I walked into the hall excitedly and saw nothing less than a world of magic. I saw the teachers covered in green. This whole term has been emeralds galore. This book week was a wonderful experience.
Brooke Gordon wrote: I was greeted by a cackling witch who was amazed at my costume. As I walked through the gate I stepped into some kind of portal and wound up in a new land. The teachers were Emerald city citizens and the library was Emerald city library.
Amelie Vincent wrote: I had a warm greeting when I arrived which brightened my day. My best friends were acting crazy and that made me laugh.
Happy Reading
Belinda Walker (Teacher Librarian)
