This week is National Science Week. The week is an annual event to celebrate science and technology in Australia. This year's theme for Science Week is Food: Different by Design.
Our students have engaged in science lessons in their classrooms and participated in lunchtime experiments and scientific demonstrations. Thank you to our classroom teachers for making science lessons fun and to Mrs Julie Wallace for creating, planning, and demonstrating our lunchtime science activities.
Parents can promote and support a love of Science through activities such as cooking, working in the garden and doing chores around the home. As scientists, you do not have to have all the answers and learning happens through mistakes and failures.
Next week is Book Week. We look forward to seeing lots of wonderful costumes at the Book Week parade on Wednesday. Families and friends are welcome to join us for the parade. Families are invited to join us for coffee and before school reading on the oval on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday morning to promote a love of reading. Hope you can join us.
A reminder Friday, 3rd September is a Pupil Free Day.
Hope all have a wonderful week,
Trina
Science Week
What an action-packed week of science at Joey's. Developing a sense of awe and wonder to engage children has been our target this week.
Lunchtime demonstrations of egg walking, bucket twirling, rocket launching and balloon inflation were a hit with students. This was accompanied by our expert students in Year 1-6 explaining experiments of static electricity, refraction, density, water-soluble colours and buoyancy. It was wonderful to watch students teaching their peers.
Friday was 'Science By Students'. Students who wished to demonstrate a scientific experiment to the school participated in 'Science Survivor'. If they could explain the scientific concept, they were in the team to showcase their knowledge to the school. We initially thought there might be a few experiments.....we had no idea of the interest with over 30 experiments demonstrated involving approximately 50 budding scientists. This was a Science Extravaganza! Joey's students explained their experiments with language beyond their years. The science buzz was electric at Joey's!
Joey's kids CAN explain scientific concepts.
Joey's kids CAN teach others!
Joey's kids are amazing!
Science at Joey's matters every day. This doesn't happen periodically.
Have a great weekend.

Learning and Teaching Adviser
On Wednesday, we recognised students who have demonstrated our Mercy Values of Love, Community, and Excellence. These students were nominated by staff for their admirable actions. Congratulations to all!
Love“If the love of God really reigns in our heart, it will show itself on the exterior.” Catherine McAuley |
Arabella Robinson | Arabella is incredibly thoughtful and caring. She shows love to others every single day. Arabella offers to help others and was even seen using a mini whiteboard to help a classmate during Maths time. She includes anyone left out and treats everyone with kindness. Arabella shares her lovely smile and her warm gentle nature with those around her and lives out our motto ‘Love God, Love Each Other’ in all she does. |
Zachariah Thomson |
On the coldest night of our Year 6 Camp at Wambiana, Zach did a truly remarkable thing. When discovering that a fellow classmate did not have a blanket, he insisted that he would be warm enough in his sleeping bag and generously gave up his blanket for a friend in need. This epitomises the spirit of Catherine McAuley and demonstrates a selfless attitude, demonstrating the mercy value of love. Well done Zach, you saw a need and did something about it. |
|
Benjamin Fanning |
Ben is a caring, helpful student. During play time he can be seen playing with one of our Prep students in the hall. He watches out for her and guides her so that she stays out of harm’s way. Ben epitomises our school motto of Love God, Love Each other. Well done Ben! |
|
Jade Cunningham | Jade is a kind and compassionate student who brings great joy into our classroom. She is inclusive of her peers and consistently puts others before herself. Jade always offers help where she can in the classroom and on the playground. Her attitude towards living out the Joey's Mercy Values is truly inspiring. Keep up the wonderful work, Jade.
Community“No matter how small the gift, God gives the increase." Catherine McAuley |
Sophia Webb | Sophia heard a younger student crying at lunch and noticed that she had hurt herself and needed help. Sophia instantly went over to the student and helped her not only with her injury but to reassure her and calm her down. Thank you for displaying wonderful kindness. You are a great role model to our younger students here at St Joeys. |
Alexis Caswell | Alexis heard a younger student crying at lunch and noticed that she was hurt. Alexis helped to calm the student down and reassure her that it would be alright. Thank you Alexis for your kindness and being a great role model to our younger students here at St Joeys.
Addison de Jongh |
Addison is always ready to help out. She is a very willing volunteer to help keep the classroom organised, especially the laptops, which she is very skilled at keeping tidy and looked after. Addison also helped look after one of our Year 2 buddies who needed a little help at lunch time finding someone to play with. |
|
Zoe Kennedy |
Zoe encompasses the Joey’s school spirit in everything she does. Not only does she work hard to improve herself, she encourages others to work hard too. She ensures others are feeling cared about and shows small acts of kindness to help them feel included. Zoe also cares for our classroom and is ready to help whenever it's needed. |
|
Excellence“We can never say, ‘it is enough.’ Catherine McAuley |
Isla Lorimer |
Isla has an excellent attitude towards all of her schoolwork and she completes everything at an outstanding level. She listens beautifully and puts a wonderful effort into her work and with her peers. Isla always tries to improve her work to make sure it is the very best it can be. She is neat, precise and shows pride in her work in all subjects. Excellent job Isla! |
Hunter Doig |
Hunter consistently displays a positive attitude towards all learning areas. He completes his work at 100% and takes pride in what he presents. Hunter listens to his teachers and takes on feedback to make sure his work is to an excellent standard. Fantastic effort Hunter! |
|
Lucas Kepper |
Lucas has been outstanding in his rigour and responsibility this term. He has made a clear decision to work hard and listen well and go beyond his best. It’s paying off, Lucas. Well done! |

Ellie demonstrates excellence in all she does! |
This week, we celebrate the adventures and learning happening in our Year Five classrooms. Thank you to Mrs de Jongh, Mrs Martin and Mrs Colahan for providing interesting and engaging learning opportunities.
2021 Putney Athletics Team
On Tuesday, our Putney Athletics Team competed in the annual Townsville Primary Schools Athletics Carnival at the Townsville Sports Reserve. Our team acquitted themselves again with great pride and enthusiasm, demonstrating tremendous school spirit.
St. Joey’s managed to secure third place overall, behind a very strong St. Joseph’s Mundingburra team (1st) and a much improved Bluewater State School (2nd).
Joey’s competitors never gave up throughout the day and showed much school spirit and a willingness to do their very best. Whilst our team performed strongly overall, there were some memorable achievements with some students winning their A Division event. A special mention to Meah Ronke (Shot Put), Lucy Whelan (High Jump), Jonah Allan (800m - record), and our mighty 8 Years Girls relay. Whilst we are proud of these achievements, it is a whole team effort to be able to achieve what we have. The entire team is to be commended for their effort on the day.
We have again students selected to attend the North Queensland Athletics trials this year. Our representatives are; Lucy Whelan and Jonah Allan. We wish them well on their journey.
As is Joey's tradition, our athletes have represented our school in a courageous and spirited manner. A special thanks to our assistants on the day, Miss Lisa, Mrs Wheeler, and Miss Juanita... We certainly had another big day out!

Library Matters
http://readiscover1.blogspot.com.au/
Book Week Countdown: This year we will have some other events to promote the value of reading starting with before-school coffee and reading with your children and their friends on the oval.
Only a few days to go for a major literature highlight of the year for students. On Wednesday Children can come to school dressed up as their favourite fictional character. students should bring along the book that inspired them to dress for Book Week. Our theme this year is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. You are invited to join us to see the fancy dress parade from 8.45am.
Here are some ideas from previous years;
Book Week Play: Our library was turned into a film set last Friday. It was Jollywood with wonderful acting, nerves, make-up repairs, and high excitement. Of course with that came some real drama; I forgot my costume Miss; My shoe broke; Feed the dog so she stays on set; The green screen needs adjusting; It all came together in the end with the help of Carolyn Seri my film crew and Elli my stage assistant. I’m looking forward to presenting the mini-movie next week at the fancy dress Parade.
Tuckshop: The children could follow the yellow brick road to visit the Emerald city tuckshop today to have some Munchkins in the lead up to Book Week. A lot of fun and creativity was inspired by a story that was published in 1900. Thanks Arlene.
See here for book week activities and times.
Book Club: Students will bring home a brochure this week. Please have your online orders completed by midday of Aug 27th.
Happy Reading
