Assumption of Holy Mary our Mother
On Sunday 15th August the Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of Our Lady when according to our faith, the Holy Mother, “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”.
The Assumption signals the end of Mary’s earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. While the bodies of both Jesus and Mary are now in heaven, there is a difference between the Assumption and the Resurrection. Where Jesus arose from the tomb and ascended into heaven by his own power, Mary’s body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son.
For this reason, we use different words to describe each event. One is the Ascension of Christ and the other, the Assumption of Mary.

Young Speechmakers Competition
St Joseph's nominates two representatives from Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 to represent our school at the Young Speechmakers Competition hosted by Southern Cross Catholic College. This competition allows students to showcase their public speaking skills and compete against other Catholic schools in our region.
While we could only select 6 students to represent our school, it was evident by the large numbers of students who auditioned that this is indeed an area of interest.
Congratulations to all students who made the brave choice to audition for this competition. The internal Joey's competition was tough, and we admire the resilience and support all students provided to the selected students.
Our Joey's representative team included Tristan Wiltshire (Yr 4), Sofia Coppola (Yr 4), Sienna Pietrobon (Yr 5), Chloe Guilfoyle (Yr 5), Lynette Njau (Yr 6), Caitlyn Wiltshire (Yr 6). Over the past few weeks, these students developed what can only be described as engaging and fun speeches. The speeches were rehearsed in front of live audiences, fellow classes with all students at Joey's providing feedback to support the team on their journey.
Each student must be commended for the calibre of their speech and enthusiasm with taking on feedback to refine their presentation style. Lynette achieved a second placing for Yr 6 and Sophia placed third for Year 4.
Science Week - Young Scientists
To celebrate National Science Week next week there will be science demonstrations and experiments at lunchtime. Stay tuned for some egg standing, bucket twirling, rocket blasting excitement.
Kids CAN! Joey’s kids CAN do science experiments for the school community.
Students who would like to showcase an experiment must inform Mrs Wallace or Mrs Neilson by Tuesday 17th with all information about the experiment. All demonstrations must be safe, quick and your child must be able to explain the scientific information about the experiment.
Have a great week.

It can sometimes feel challenging for parents to raise happy, well, and resilient children. What can help our families and schools are up-to-date resources aimed at providing information on key topics that relate to the parenting and the well-being of our children?
SchoolTV has partnered with Townsville Catholic Education to deliver ongoing support to parent communities, teachers, and school staff. The SchoolTV platform is integral as part of a whole-school approach to student well-being. It is now available to our parents and families. Each topic or edition addresses key issues using brief interviews with expert specialists, fact sheets, parent quizzes, recommended apps, books, and much more.
SchoolTV streamlines and brings together information from many reputable sources such as REACHOUT and Beyondblue, Australian Psychological Society, Nutrition Australia, Headspace, and E-safety Commission. This provides a very reliable and accessible resource, saving parents time and confusion searching online across multiple sites.
Athletics@Joey's
The Townsville Primary Schools Athletics Carnival will be held next Tuesday 17th August (Week 6), from 9.00 am until 2.50 pm at the Townsville Sports Reserve. Field event training and sprint/relay practice was held at school throughout Friday. The team is looking sharp. We wish our mighty team all the very best of luck.
Just a reminder that children are asked to assemble in the grandstand (8.00am - 8.30am) and will be required to find their own transport to the carnival. Competitors not collected by parents will have a supervised walk back to school at 2.20pm. 800m runners (11 and 12 Years) will need to be picked up after their event at 2.30pm. Students with parents present will be invited to attend the presentation. Students (7-9 years) are able to leave the carnival after Shuttle Relays (12.15 - 12.45pm).
Townsville Cricket
Congratulations to Patrick Fanning on his selection (two years in a row) in the Townsville Schools Cricket team. This effort is even more meritorious as he backed up from school camp to attend the trials. Patrick will now participate in the North Queensland trials at Home Hill later this month. We wish Patrick all the very best in his journey.

Book Week - August 25th - Wednesday morning at 8:45am
Our theme this year is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. On the day students should bring along the book that inspired them to dress for Book Week. I have started asking children what they are dressing up as so they can start getting ready.
I encourage children to be creative and make their own costumes from items they already have at home. Please do not feel you have to buy a costume. Check out this site for some ideas of characters and costumes.
