Catholic Education Week
This week we are celebrating the great things that take place in Catholic schools, especially St Joseph's, every day.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is: A Spirited Tomorrow.
This theme acknowledges the long tradition of Catholic education and its continued relevance in preparing students for the future.
On Monday, our School Leaders- Eden Carfoot, Greta Ramsay, Zach Lorimer and Joseph Smith joined Mr Ham and I at the annual Catholic Education Week Mass held at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Coming together with other schools from the Townsville Diocese was a great way to begin the week.
Thank you God for our minds
May our minds understand and know.
May they help us learn and grow.
Thank you God for our minds.
Thank you God for our hearts.
May they be filled with love for all.
May they listen for your call.
Thank you God for our hearts.
Thank you God for our hands.
May our hands show love and care.
May they welcome, serve and share.
Thank you God for our hands.
We make this prayer in the name of Jesus our friend.
Amen

Mercy Values Awards
This week, we recognised the efforts of our students who display the values of Love, Community and Excellence. These students were nominated by staff for everyday actions that espouse these values. Congratulations to all!
LoveIf the love of God really reigns in our heart, it will show itself on the exterior. Catherine McAuley |
Indiana Lalor Indiana is a shining light in and out of the classroom. She speaks with kindness to everyone. Indiana shows compassion to those who are feeling nervous or unsure. She encourages others to do their best. Indiana follows Jesus in showing love to everyone. Congratulations Indiana on making St Joseph’s School a wonderful place to learn. |
Grace Wolanski Grace shows love and kindness to everyone around her. She is always willing to help others if they are struggling with a task, she shares what she is using even if that means missing out on something herself. She always celebrates others’ successes. Grace has been a helpful student assisting Ms Hobson as Term 3 begins. Grace, you are an amazing, kind student. |

CommunityNo matter how small the gift, God gives the increase. Catherine McAuley |
Audrey Burbidge One of our new students was nervous about waiting at the pick up zone. Audrey kindly offered to help her and show her what to do when walking to St Patrick’s. Thank-you Audrey for being a kind and thoughtful Joey’s kid. |
Kate Child Kate demonstrated Joey's community spirit when she noticed another student who needed help outside our library. She comforted the student and remained with them until a staff member could provide assistance to the child in need. Kate, you are a star and help to make Joey’s a great school. Congratulations. |

Charlotte Brassington One of our new students was nervous about waiting at the pick up zone. Charlotte kindly offered to help her and show her what to do when walking to St Patrick’s. Thank-you Charlotte for being a kind and thoughtful Joey’s kid. |

ExcellenceWe can never say, ‘it is enough.’ Catherine McAuley |
Ayoola Akinyemi Ayoola demonstrates Excellence by never giving up even when things are hard. On camp, she climbed a very steep mountain with large rocks along the edge and, although, she was shaking with fear and wanted to give up, she continued on. During the abseiling activity, Ayoola bravely hooked up to the ropes and went to the mountain’s edge. Well-done Ayoola on your inspirational moments. |
Zoe Simmonds Zoe demonstrates excellence each day when she strives for her own successes and persists with all learning tasks. On the recent Year 5 camp, she faced her fears and bravely abseiled down a cliff face. Congratulations Zoe on always showing persistence and excellence. |
Hope all have a wonderful week,
Trina
Olympics Live Townsville
We are pleased to advise that The Australian Olympic Committee has invited students in Years 4-6 to attend a special Olympics Unleashed session at the Olympics Live Site in Townsville, next Tuesday 3 August from 2pm-2:40pm. The Live Site will be situated in front of the Townsville Sailing Club on The Strand, and will be hosted by Olympic Gold Medallist Swimmer Brooke Hanson.
The Olympics Unleashed program brings Olympians and athletes aspiring to the Olympic Games into Australian schools to share their personal journeys and experiences to inspire, motivate and encourage students to be their personal best and unleash their potential. Our athletes’ stories demonstrate the lifelong benefits of goal-setting, developing resilience and pursuing their passions – whether that’s in the classroom, the playground, the sporting field or at home.
Students will return to school and parents are asked to collect their child(ren) as per normal pickup.
Townsville Triathalon and Multisport Festival
This week, St Joey's hosted Minty and Gavin Cooper as ambassadors of the Townsville Triathalon and Multisport Festival. They gave an overview of the exciting event that is happening in Townsville on 15th August.
The Battle is a contest unique to Townsville. An action-packed fun event for the serious and not so serious competitor. Challenges of all levels for individuals, families, kids, corporate groups and workmates.
Further information can be found on the flyer in today's newsletter.
Interschool Athletics 2021
The Townsville Primary Schools Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday 17th August (Week 6), from 9.00 am until 2.50 pm at the Townsville Sports Reserve.

Book Week: Aug 25th Wednesday morning at 8.45. Our theme this year is: Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. Here are some suggestions of what you can dress up as in each year level. These are books that may be read in class with your child’s teacher and offer students a connection with the story. When choosing a character, it helps if the child can relate to the story and the character. For example, being a convict for a day offers an interesting look at the past.

I encourage children to be creative and make their own costumes from items they already have at home. Please do not feel you have to buy a costume. Check out this site for some ideas of characters and costumes.
Competitions: Students in Years 1-6 have been invited to participate in an Olympic Reading Challenge. It is a fun opportunity to be an Olympic Reader with a medal to match their efforts. There are some great prizes to be won. 24 students will be invited to a literary lunch according to their borrowing records throughout the year and their reading attitude in the classroom. It is an exciting way to promote reading especially to those students who haven’t quite caught the reading bug yet.
Lunch time fun in the Library:
Elli Torrisi with her storytelling group and Tristan Wiltshire organising his puppetry group.
Happy Reading
