NAIDOC Week Celebrations
This week, our St Joseph's community celebrated NAIDOC Week. We began the week with a whole school liturgy. Throughout the week, students participated in activities to learn about, create and reflect upon the connections for Indigenous Australians and all Australians to the country.
We ended the week with whole school prayer and participated in Dadirri. Each class presented their quilt piece, showing their representation of Heal Country! Heal our Nation. Dadirri is a form of meditation through stillness, awareness and deep listening.
Thank you to Ms Annette, Ms Tracey, and Mrs Walker for their help with NAIDOC Week.
Catholic Education Week
Next week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. This year’s theme is ‘A Spirited Tomorrow’. This theme acknowledges the long tradition of Catholic education and its continued relevance in preparing students for the future. The theme also references the work of the Plenary Council in discerning the way forward for the Church in Australia.
Our School Captains will attend Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Monday with students and teachers from across the Townsville Catholic Diocese. As a school, we will celebrate the week with a whole school liturgy on Wednesday, 29th July at 8:45am. All welcome.
100 Years of St Joseph's Parish
This weekend, the Parish of St Joseph's celebrates 100 Years. All families, especially the children who participated in the Sacraments on Initiation in April, are invited to attend Sunday Mass with Bishop Tim celebrating with the Parish.
Mass begins at 8:30am. We hope to see you there to celebrate the centuary of our Parish.
Hope all have a wonderful week,
Trina

'Kids CAN' was a force to be reckoned with!
Our Joey's students used their entrepreneurial skills to create products and services for our school community and raised $5000!
'Parents CAN' joined the fun with a Luncheon raising an additional $5000.
Joey's raised $10 000 for Vinnies Winter Appeal!
Kids CAN! PARENTS CAN!
But wait there was more.
Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, Joey's students were randomly spoilt with skipping ropes, lollies, vouchers and clothing.
Teachers knew they needed to keep up with the efforts and enthusiasm of our students and created a 'flashmob' to showcase TEACHERS CAN!
A massive thank you to Sandi Simmonds (Beachathon Organiser Extraordinaire), Pam Griffiths and Tonilee Luck (Luncheon Party Planners) along with our support crew, who cooked sausages and created safe pathways for students to cross the road.
KIDS CAN!
JOEY'S COMMUNITY CAN!
WE DID!
This week, our Year One students share their learning. Thank-you to Mrs De Lange and Miss Megan for creating interesting and exciting learning opportunities.
For your child's safety and the safety of others, please drop off and pick up your child at the Church.
The carparks near the roundabout are not a SAFE place to drop off or pick up.
Each afternoon, supervision for pick up is only at the Church.
Thanks for your cooperation.
I encourage children to be creative and make their costumes from items they already have at home. Please do not feel you have to buy a costume. Check out this site for some ideas of characters and costumes.
The children will be adding their own art work to create another world in the library. Emerald city is an exciting place to be.
Competitions: Students in Years 1-6 will be invited to participate in an Olympic Reading Challenge. It is a fun opportunity to be an Olympic Reader with a medal to match their efforts. There are some great prizes to be won. Students will receive their challenge in class. This year we are shifting book week to a Wednesday morning as mid-week celebration to their reading successes throughout the term. Not only do kids dress up as their favourite book character but they participate in some literary activities during the day. Two Students from each class will be invited to a literary lunch according to their borrowing records throughout the year and their reading attitude in the classroom. It is an exciting way to promote reading especially to those students who haven’t quite caught the reading bug yet. More information to come about other competitions and activities happening during book week.
Year 1 Borrowing Certificates: Congratulations to the children who have received certificates for borrowing and reading 25 books to date. The next challenge is to get to 50 for a prize. Congratulations Lauren Gordon, Chase Doig and Joshua Schwarz
Happy Reading
