Dear Parents and Carers
We are almost at the halfway point of another busy term! We have had some wonderful events already with plenty more to come over the next 5 weeks.
Our Mother's Day liturgy and coffee morning on Monday was fantastic. It was wonderful to see so many families able to attend. A special thanks to Mrs Neilsen for the beautiful liturgy and to Mrs Curley and our volunteers in the tuckshop for providing us with a delicious breakfast. Thanks also to the wonderful student leaders who assisted on the day.
While on the subject of thanks I would like to particularly thank Mrs Neilsen and Mrs Wallace for their efforts over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, I have been unable to attend work due to an unexpected bout of pneumonia. I have greatly appreciated their help, patience and leadership during this time. I would also like to thank our prospective Prep parents who have kindly agreed to reschedule interviews during my absence. I know these are important for families and in particular for children, as it is an exciting part of the transition to school. Recovering has taken longer than anticipated and I am very grateful for their understanding. We are back on track with these interviews and it has been wonderful meeting with existing and new families to talk about all that St Joseph's has to offer.
Our building work continues to progress. Next week will see groundwork completed and the beginning of the building phase. Our contractors have been working closely with the school to minimise disruptions and we are very grateful for this, particularly this week as our students participated in Naplan. I would like to thank you and our students for your patience during the building works. I realise the changes can pose challenges for our community but am very grateful for your patience and understanding.
Have a great week.
Tim
Mother's Day
Thanks to all the Mums, Grandmothers and Aunties who were able to join us for our Mother's Day Coffee, Croissants and our school Liturgy. A big thank-you to Arlene and Belinda for making the delicious croissants. Ben for helping with the setup, Archer Coffee Van for the great coffee and St Floral for the flowers.
The Accession of the Lord
This weekend is the Ascension of the Lord. Jesus showed himself to the eleven and said to them, ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the good news to all creation…’ Then He was taken up into Heaven. This Feast assures us Jesus is still with us and we are called to recognise His presence in the goodness, love and forgiveness of the community and in the great and small miracles of life.
200 Years of Catholic Education
Fr Rob Galea, a Maltese priest based in Australia has created a song to celebrate 200 Years. His song will feature in celebrations around Australia.
Pentecost Sunday
Sunday, May 23rd is Pentecost. This is sometimes known as the birthday of the Church.
Families and students are invited to celebrate Pentecost Sunday at Mass; 8:30am.
Hope all have a wonderful week,
Trina
The Amazing Race
Joey's version of 'The Amazing Race' was definitely a race unlike any other.
Students in Year 3 and Year 5 worked in groups on an orienteering style hunt. Students were given a map of the school with checkpoints marked. They interpreted the map to solve mathematical problems and answered riddles and puzzles. Some checkpoints involved physical challenges of an obstacle course, recycling rubbish, posing for photos to represent a problem-solving strategy and sorting numbers.
The excitement and engagement by students with these mathematical concepts will ensure 'Joey's Amazing Race' will become an event for future Year 3 and 5 students.
Congratulations to the winning teams:

NAPLAN
Students in Years 3 and 5 began their NAPLAN journey this week. They participated in NAPLAN testing for Reading, Writing and Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation). Next week, students will complete their final test of Numeracy (Tuesday).
NAPLAN provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at a point in time. NAPLAN is one aspect of our assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.
Putney Cross Country Team
We wish our St. Joey’s Putney Cross Country Team all the best when they represent our school at the Townsville Schools Cross Country Carnival at Bicentennial Park, on Tuesday 25th May. Our training sessions are next week on Monday 17th May and Wednesday 19th May, 7.30am - 8.00am. Our team will begin at the Water Park and run to Strand Park, before returning. A huge thank you to our staff who will be assisting with this.

National Simultaneous Storytime: Imagine astronauts reading stories from space to school children & families in an exciting new program that combines literature with science! The Australian library association is keen to make reading special. Every year they encourage as many Australian Children as possible to gather at the same time to read the same book. The target is 1 million reading. This year the chosen book is being read from space by an astronaut on May 19th. This week I will introduce the story ‘Give me some Space’ by Phillip Bunting with some competitions for students to participate in with lots of prizes. Upload your colouring competition here to win National prizes For more information go to this link.
Readers are leaders
Class in the Spotlight: All students in P-2 are encouraged to borrow weekly. Year 1's are being acknowledged after borrowing 25 books with a personally designed certificate from Leo the Library Lion rewarding their reading stamina.
Congratulations to these students.
Readers Cup Team: Our lovely readers were photographed by the Bulletin this week. Check out the local paper to see the story.
Happy reading
Belinda Walker
Teacher Librarian
The format will be a little different in 2021. More details to follow next week.
What is Beachathon?
Beachathon is a walk undertaken by Joey's students on the final day of Term 2. Parents are welcome to join classes on this picturesque walk along Pallarenda to the Strand.
What happens on the day?
- Students in Prep to Year 2 walk from school to the Rock Pool and back to school
- Students in Year 3 walk from school to the top of Jezzine Barracks and back to school
- Students in Years 4-6 are to be dropped off by parents at Robertson Park, Pallarenda and walk back to school.
What happens when students return to school?
Students receive a sausage and an ice block when they return to school. A celebration occurs in the school hall.
Students can be collected at 1.00pm from the hall. Students not collected will remain with their class teachers and be dismissed as normal at 2.50pm.
Coming up to the cooler months we have plenty of 2nd hand jackets and jumpers in stock selling for $5.
The Uniform Shop (located at the Tuckshop) is open every Tuesday from 8.00am to 9.30am.
