Religious Education
This week, our Prep and Year One students have visited our parish Church as a part of their Religious Education learning.
Our Preps, with the help of Seana Mokrzecki spent time learning about the different parts of the Church and how these objects are used during a Catholic Mass.
Our Year One students reenacted the sacrament of Baptism with Fr Siby. The students learnt about the different symbols for a Baptism and watched as Fr Siby blessed the 'baby' with Holy Water and ointed him or her with Oil of Chrism.
Thank-you Father Siby and Seana for your time to enrich our learning about the church and it's sacraments.
Spiritual Experience for Staff
On Wednesday, our staff participated and engaged in Professional Development with Tammi Webber, Townsville Catholic Education Indigenous Education Advisor. Our teachers met at Jezzine Barracks to walk on country to develop their awareness and understanding of Traditional Owners and local history. They experienced Indigenous Spirituality of local customs, dreaming and knowledge.
Following our afternoon at Jezzine, staff joined with our Indigenous families for our first Meet and Greet for 2021. Thank-you to all our families who were able to join us.
Feast of St Joseph, The Worker- Saturday, 1st May
Pope Francis has declared 2021 the 'Year of Saint Joseph'. Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows.
We celebrate two feast days for Joseph: March 19 for Joseph the Husband of Mary and May 1 for Joseph the Worker. Saint Joseph is the model for all who work, because in his humble and simple work as a carpenter, he cared for the holy family and provided for the needs of Mary and Jesus. Through Saint Joseph, we can learn the importance of diligence and faithfulness in our daily life and work.
May, The Month of Mary
By tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devotion. In May, it is the Blessed Virgin Mary. This devotion arose among Jesuits in Rome in the late 18th century and quickly spread throughout the Western Church. By the time of Pope Pius IX's declaration of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854, it had become universal.
There are several Marian feast days in May in honour of Mary, including
Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament (13th May)
Feast of Mary Help of Christians (24th May)
Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (31st May).
Celebrating our Mums
Our school community will come together to celebrate all the significant women in our families' lives; Mums, Grandmas and Aunties. On Monday, 10th May, we will begin the morning with coffee and croissants on the school oval from 7:30am and celebrate together with a whole school liturgy at 9am.
Coffee and croissants are for adults only.
Hope you are able to join us. Please RSVP by Wednesday, 5th May.
Hope all have a good week,
Trina

Tuesday 11th May - Writing Test
Wednesday 12th May - Reading Test
Friday 14th May - Conventions of Language Test (spelling, grammar and punctuation)

Authorities provide parents with the opportunity to withdraw their children from the NAPLAN tests. If you do not wish your child to participate or if your child will be absent for the below dates, please contact your child's teacher.
NAPLAN Test Administration rules are very strict. If your child is away for a NAPLAN test, he/she will need to sit the test on the day he/she returns to school. Your child will sit the test in another room and won't be able to complete the same test as his/her classmates until he/she has caught up with missed tests.
If your child is late for the NAPLAN test, he/she will need to sit the test in a different room (school starts at 8:30 am).

Books for your middle school readers: Once your child hits a certain reading level in those early years of primary school, they start to crave books with more complex storylines and in their area of interest. Ravenous middle primary readers can devour books at an astonishing rate and for many parents, this time really is the ‘golden age of reading.’
I always encourage parents and teachers to keep their capable bookworms reading age-appropriate books for as long as possible – there is plenty of time for reading books with *all the issues* and the size of the book is not a clue of value in many cases. A series can be an excellent way to really capture the attention of middle primary readers as they enjoy being immersed in a familiar world, often for months on end.
I also encourage you to never let your young readers leave picture books behind! Picture books of today are complex with storylines that are often sophisticated and thought provoking. We live in an age of visuals and picture books teach visual literacy like no other teaching tool I know of. The list below contains my favourite books for your middle primary readers which are available in our library. Children can put any of these books on hold on the library link found on their intranet page.
Readers Cup Team: Congratulations to Eden Carfoot, Estella Dobbins, Caitlyn Wiltshire, Hannah Mosch and Phoebe Morris who are our super readers for 2021 and are very deserving to be in our READING KNIGHTS team. They have started reading their 5 books in readiness for our Regional competition on June 11th. Please send them your best wishes and support as they become thoroughly familiar with these books. Each week each team member will tell you why they love reading and present one of the books they are reading for the competition. By being on the team they are automatically ambassadors for reading and strive to encourage their peers to read.
Junior Librarians: Our junior librarians will be acknowledged on assembly next week with some students receiving badges. They are doing a wonderful job running lunch time activities and assisting their class with returning and shelving.
Happy reading

St Joey’s 2021 Cross Country Carnival & Fun Run
Our annual Cross Country was once again held at the stunning Anzac Park. We are so fortunate to have this incredible park on our doorstep and allowed to use it. The day began with spirited cheering all the way to the event, led by our enthusiastic year 6 leaders. Despite some early nerves, our competitors overcame any doubts and acquitted themselves with great persistence and endurance. It was inspiring to see fellow competitors supporting each other to complete the course. After our races, we marched back to school knowing that everyone had given their best and enjoyed the event. Our presentation was held in our hall, where Ryan was presented the Aggregate trophy and Benjamin received the Spirit trophy, in a nail biting finish with Faulkner. Our preps to Year 2 students enjoyed their ‘Fun Run’ on our schools ‘Townsville to Cairns’ circuit. A big thank you to the numerous parent helpers and to our staff who embraced both events. We wish our St. Joey’s Putney Cross Country Team all the best when they represent our school at the Townsville Schools Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday 25th May. Notes will go home with students selected in the team next week.
