Lenten Journey Continues
Week 3
Meet Oliva, a 22 year old Tanzanian woman who lives with her farmer husband, two young sons and an adopted neice and nephew.
As a young girl Oliva did not attend school and did not learn how to read, write or count. As an adult Oliva ran a kiosk and worked as a farm labourer, however, her business was losing money as she could not add up.
Oliva enrolled in Cartias Australia-supported literacy and numeracy classes. She also set up a classroom at her kiosk to teach her neighbours for free.
Now, Oliva has graduated along with some of her students. Her kiosk is thriving, attendance within her classroom is growing and she is able to help her children with their homework.
Oliva now aims to become a pastor and run for leadership at the next local election.
Oliva aspires to BE MORE and wants her community to achieve its vision of a better life for all.
St Joseph's Day
On Friday, 19th March, we will celebrate the patron Saint of our community St Joseph. St Joseph was the husband of Mary and the father of Jesus here on Earth. God chose Joseph for a very special mission. Joseph carried out his mission with courage, strength and intergity.
We would like to invite families to celebrate the feast day of St Joseph with a school Mass on Friday 19th March at 9am in the Michael Putney Hall.
Children will celebrate our school feast day by enjoying activities with their buddy class through out the day.
Project Compassion- COWBOYS
To celebrate the first home game of the COWBOYS at Queensland Country Bank Stadium,
children are invited to wear the
colours of the Cowboys on
Friday, 19th March.
Gold coin donation for the day.
All monies raised will be donated to Caritas Project Compassion
(Please ensure all clothing is sun safe)
Hope all have a wonderful week,
Trina

Research: When I first started teaching, students used the school library or their public library to find books on their topic. Many families may remember having a set of trusty encyclopedias at home especially for school assignments. The upside was that students didn’t have to critically analyze whether their books were suitable or reliable. Professional staff selected quality books from reliable authors.
When children research today they will probably be using the internet as their main source. This requires many skills to find a suitable website that will give readable, credible, unbiased, non-commercial information.
Our young students will need support to sift through the hundreds of web sites presented.
Our Catholic Education Diocese provides another option. We are subscribed to an online encyclopedia called Encyclopedia Britannica.
Yes, encyclopedias are now an online database that schools pay an annual subscription too. Students are welcome to use this reliable source from home to assist with completing assignments. It is a reliable source with trustworthy authors educated in their field. No advertising or distractions just pure good quality information. Of course, great books are still available for students to use.
Readers Cup: Next Friday interested year 6 students will be competing in our in-school Reader’s cup competition.
Maker space: This is a trendy way to say that there is a place in your school to make and create. This term the Junior librarians have organized some origami activities. We are making animals as it is Earth Hour at the end of March where we show our support for a renewable future which will make the world a better place for all our living things on this beautiful planet.
Happy Reading

‘Townsville2Cairns Challenge’ – 2021
Our annual ‘Townsville2Cairns Challenge’ will operate daily, starting Monday 22 March (Week 9 - Term 1). A course will be marked on the oval with each lap that students complete recorded on a year level tally. The challenge offers students an opportunity to develop some fitness and stamina in readiness for our carnivals. Whilst there is a trophy on offer for the first year level to reach Cairns, the emphasis is on fun and building condition.
For our 2021 Cross Country, students in Year 3-6 will participate at Anzac Park, whilst our P-2's will have their fun run on our Townsville to Cairns course at school. More information about these carnivals will be communicated in forthcoming newsletters.
Dear Parents and Carers
It is such an affirming moment when students are able to reflect upon their learning and explain what it means to their personal lives. I know all our instrumental music teachers have heard anecdotal stories from their students on how the music lessons they are undertaking have brought about a new or invigorated sense of the complexity and beauty of the world of music. When children share stories of how music, and certainly the arts overall, have brought them closer to their siblings or family members, have made a grandparent smile or simply created a musical ambience in their homes reveals the importance of music and the arts. The arts enhance children's academic achievement, develops respect for themselves and others and gives them training for life and provides them with valid means of self-expression.
This week, I would like to share some images of our recorder and woodwind students in action. Ms Bourne's lessons on Fridays are with some of our youngest fledgling musicians in year 1 along with the older saxophone and flute students. No doubt, with a wonderful foundation of music in year 1, we will be seeing and hearing a lot from these students in the coming years as they journey through learning at St Joseph's.
All the best,
Jason Bennett
