Dear Parents and Carers
This Saturday evening the Diocesan P&F Association will recognise the contribution of P&F members from across the Diocese. The Mark Mappas Awards were established to recognise the outstanding contributions made by members of the school community to the life and success of the school. This year St. Joseph’s celebrates the contribution of Jason Bennett. Jason has been and continues to be an integral and highly valued member of our school and parish community. I have included below the submission that will be read out on Saturday evening, broadly covering some of Jason’s many contributions.
On behalf of the school community I would like to thank and congratulate Jason and his family for their ongoing contribution to our wonderful school community. If you have the chance please pass on your congratulations and thanks to Jason.
I am looking forward to the awards night and to seeing Jason and his family recognised.
Have a great week.
Tim
Jason has been an integral part of the school staff and community at St Joseph’s The Strand since 2010. In addition to his role on staff, Jason has been, and continues to be, an active and engaged member of the school P&F and Parish community.
Jason has been an active member of the P&F for many years, having held the position of P&F President for a time. He is still very involved with activities and events within the school community and in support of the P&F. For example, in 2018, Jason initiated and organized the inaugural and highly successful ‘Joey’s at Sunset’ event for the school community. This was a wonderful evening of music, entertainment and community and one that will now become an annual event for the school.
Jason is passionate about his work and his community and routinely goes above and beyond what is expected, often providing an abundance of support for a wide range of purposes.
His is a creative and dedicated member of St Joseph’s. He is often the first to arrive and the last to leave, to help ensure the success of events. All of this is made possible with the support of his family. His wife Paula and children Jay Jay and Aria are always assisting and contributing to the school community alongside Jason.
St Joseph’s The Strand is deeply appreciative of all that Jason has done and continues to do for the school and parish. We also acknowledge and thank his family for supporting Jason in sharing his time and talent with the staff, students and parents of St Joseph’s.
Religion in Year 1
In Religion this term the Year 1 students are learning about the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. Last Friday the classes visited the Church where Fr Joseph spoke to them about the symbols associated with the Sacrament of Baptism. Fr Joseph also performed a mock Baptism for the students so that they could see and hear the actions and words used in the celebration of the Sacrament. Grace from 1CJ said, “I learnt that Baptism is really special because once you have done it you are part of God’s Church and part of God’s life.” Ethan from 1R explained that “the Priest pours the water on the baby’s head three times to Baptise them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Sunday’s Gospel
Mark 10:17-30 (shorter form Mark 10:17-27)
A man with many possessions asks Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life.
This Gospel reading recounts a time when Jesus was asked by a person ‘What do I need to do to have a good life?’. Jesus replied that the person needed to follow the 10 Commandments. The young man said that he did follow the 10 Commandments but what else could he do? Jesus then told the young man to sell everything that he had and give the money to the poor.
Reflection
Reflect upon the message of Jesus from this Gospel story. What do we need to give up in order to follow Jesus and live a truly good life? What things might be holding us back?

Socktober This year to help support Catholic Missions and the people of Myanmar we are participating in Socktober. On Tuesday 30th October everyone is invited to wear crazy socks and bring a gold coin donation. Our very own Mr Bennett will be hosting a Rock Your Socks Off disco during lunch time on this day. |
The Rosary
In October there is a special devotion to the Rosary. The Rosary is a meditation on the life of Jesus and Mary and was developed as a breathing prayer. The Rosary is a mantra; a centering prayer involving the repetition of a particular word or phrase as part of one’s breathing pattern.
Take some time over the month of October and read the scripture stories associated with each of the mysteries of the Rosary.

This day, Father,
may my eyes be opened
to see the beauty
in all that is ordinary - yet special -
around me.
May the glory of all that you have made
remind me of your presence
and lead me closer to you.
Please keep in your prayers the Barry family whose Grandmother passed away this week and the Smith family whose Grandfather passed away last week.
Have a wonderful week.
God Bless
Amanda
A big thank you to all of the awesome Joey’s kids who have been recycling their soft plastic. This reduces the need to produce more plastic and also saves the beautiful marine life from eating small pieces of plastic that end up in the ocean.
Mrs McKinnon will have all the soft plastic ready to go from her classroom on Tuesday and Friday if anyone is going by Coles or Woolworths on their way home from school. This is a valuable practice for students so that they feel actively involved in the recycling process.
Replas is the company recycling the plastics we collect. Replas uses the material as the resource to produce a huge range of recycled-plastic products, from fitness circuits to sturdy outdoor furniture, to bollards, signage and more. To find out more about this amazing sustainable initiative, visit http://www.redcycle.net.au/
Remember, it’s cool to recycle because it’s helping to COOL our planet.
Keep up the amazing work Joeys!
Yours in recycling,

Year 1 Library Awards: Students are being rewarded for regular borrowing with a lucky dip when they reach 50 books for the year. Congratulations to those students who have received a certificate and prize so far.
Book Club: Thanks for returning book club to the office. As it is our last book club for the year I have extended the return date to Friday morning. You can order on line or manually with your book club magazine. Please make sure you have a name and grade on your order.
Junior librarians: These students have been a great help to their library. They help with lunch time activities and borrowing and returning weekly. They are rewarded for their work in the library with certificates and prizes. This week Aria, Matilda and Sera have won a free book from book club.
Drawing Competition: The JuniorLlibrarians will be running this competition. The Theme is ‘Spring in Summer.’ What do you like doing at this time of the year as we lead into our much awaited summer break? A template is available at the library or here and there are some book prizes to be won.
Lessons: Preps and year 1s have been reading books that explore the themes tolerance and kindness. After reading the Rainbow fish by Marcus Pfister they created a scale with a kind deed to be a part of this fish.
Year 2 & 3s designed an illustration as a stimulus to writing a story called ‘Look out Chook’
This was inspired by the author Peter Karnavas.
More can be seen on the above link.
Last term year 4s did some fabulous book reviews and I’m looking forward to creating book trailers with them this term.
Year 5 have made a remarkable improvement in reading using the Litpro program. I can see a new motivation from children willing to read books independently borrowed from the library.
Happy Reading

Coles Sports for School Program
A huge thank you to all of our families who donated the vouchers in the Coles Sports for Schools program. Our sporting equipment has arrived and our sports shed is looking very well stocked at present. With your support, the Woolworths and Coles initiatives really help out!
The Uniform shop will be open each Wednesday until the last week of School and then will sadly be closing it's doors. There is limited stock available for your 2019 purchases.
Uniforms are also available at the School locker.
